CHAPTER NO: 1 PHYSICAL STATE OF THE EARTH

EXERCISE QUESTIONS:

Q.NO.1) Mcqs Type:

1. The thickness of external core of the Earth is: (2250 Km/1250 km/2050 km/1950 km)
2. The 70% of volcanoes are found: (On the bed of Sea /in rivers/on dry land/on mountains)
3. The thickness of upper Mantle is: (770 Km/570 Km/670 Km/870 Km)
4. In 1985, the volcanism took place in Andes Mountain’s volcano (Columbia) and the loss of lives was about:
(20,000/30,000/40,000/50,000)
5. The instrument measure the intensity of earthquake is: (Barometer/Hygrometer/Thermometer/Seismograph)

Q.NO.2) Give Short answers:

Questions Answers
i) Give Two reasons for earthquake. i) Most of the earthquakes occur due to the movements of the
tectonic plates inside the earth. When these plates collide with
each other the earth surface vibrates.
ii) The second largest reason of earthquakes is volcanism. When
the semi solid matter inside the earth erupts out from any part of
the earth, there is movement on the surface of the earth. In this
way the surface of the earth shakes and we feel earthquake.
ii) Write down the names of internal parts of Earth. The Names of the internal part of the earth are:
Mantle: It has two parts Upper Mantle and Lower Mantle.
Core: It has also two parts External Core and Internal Core.
iii) Write down the names of big plates of Earth. The names of the big plates of Earth are:
(i) Pacific plate, (ii) North American plate, (iii) South American
plate (iv) Eurasian plate (v) African plate (vi) Australian plate, (vii)
Antarctica plate
iv) What is volcanism? The eruption of hot semi-solid matter called “Magma” from
inside the surface of the earth is known as “Volcanism”
v) What is the meaning of “Ring of Fire”? The area all around Pacific plate is known as “Ring of Fire”

Q.No.3 Write the Answers of the following in detail:

1) Explain the Composition of Earth’s interior

Answer:
Composition of Earth’s interior:
The internal part of Earth consists of Mantle, External Core and Internal Core. Its composition is given below.
A) Mantle: It lies below the crust and is known as Mantle. It has two parts;
i) Upper Mantle: This part of Earth is 670 km thick. It is mostly found in molten rocks.
ii) Lower Mantle: This part of Earth lies below the Upper Mantle which is hard and solid. Its thickness is 2230 km. This part of Earth
mostly consists of Silicon, Magnesium.
B) Core: The Earth’s sphere lies below the Mantle are known as Core. It has two parts.
i) External Core: This part of Earth is present below the Mantle in liquid form. It consists of molten rocks. Its thickness is 2250 km.
ii) Internal Core: This part of Earth is made up of “Nickle” and “Iron” and also known as “Nife”. The name is derived from “Nickle”
and “Ferrous”. The internal Core is solid. Its thickness is 1220 km.

2) Describe the types of Faults.

Answer:
There are three types of faults.
A) Normal Fault: When Crust parts move in opposition direction due to removal of upper layers and Magma comes out in form of
Lava.
B) Transform Fault: When plates move forward and backward, and rub against each other. In this fault earth’s part does not move up
or down.
C) Reverse Fault: In this fault plates move towards each other. Due to the pressure between plates earthquakes and volcanism occur.
As a result mountains are formed.

3) Discuss the effects of Earthquakes.

ANSWER:
i) Buildings, roads and bridges are destroyed
ii) Loss of lives, properties and animals.
iii) The infrastructure i.e system of electricity, water and gas are disturbed.
iv) There is fire due to electricity short circuiting and gas leakage problem.
v) The means of transportation such as roads and railways are disturbed.
vi) There is also a threat of floods.

4) Discuss the instrument used to measure Earthquakes.

Answer:
The instrument that used to measure the intensity of earth is called “Seismograph”. It works on the following
principles.
i) Intensity: is a measure of the amount of Earth shaking that happens at a given location in an Earthquake.
ii) Magnitude: is a measure of the seismic waves or the amount of energy released or the source of the earthquake.
iii) Richter: is a scale to measure the intensity and magnitude of the Earthquake. It is measure from 0-9 on Richter scale.

6) Analyze Volcanism and its effects.

ANSWER:
A) Volcanoes:
The eruption of hot semi-solid matter (Magma) from inside the surface of the Earth is called Volcanism. During this process when
Magma comes out on the surface than its called Lava. Usually this process occurs along the cracks of Earth plates because volcanoes
are mostly found on plates boundaries. In this process different rocky material and gases are involved. About 70% volcanoes of the
World are found on the bed of the seas.
B) Effects of Volcanoes:
i) Volcanic rocks are formed.
ii) The matter, gases and dust which come out from volcanoes are found in spreading environmental pollution in nearby areas which
affect the life of living organisms.
iii) This process also increases the temperature because sometimes, clouds of different gases are released rapidly and as a result a
volcano bursts with thunder and gases with different matter are also released.

7) Explain the types of Volcanoes and its distribution.

Answer:
I) Active Volcanoes: The volcanoes in which the volcanism continues are known as active volcanoes. Fujiyama (Japan), Vesuvius
(Italy)
II) Dormant Volcanoes: A long period of time has gone since the process of eruption of Magma but the volcanism can occur any time
in these volcanoes.
III) Extinct Volcanoes: In such volcanoes the eruption process has stopped and there is no chance of eruption in future.
Distribution of Volcanoes:
a) These are found on the cracks of the Earth.
b) Most of the volcanoes of the World are surrounding the Pacific Ocean, in particular the eastern island and this portion is also
known as “Ring of Fire” .
c) Trans-Eurasian is the second important area where these volcanoes are found.
d) Third important area of these volcanoes are found between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans because this area is formed due to
volcanism. This area is also known as the “Mid-Atlantic Ridge”
