Part 1:

1. What’s your mother tongue?

Vietnamese is my native language. This was the first language I learned at home when I was little
and was still able to communicate when the data was gathered.
2. What other languages do you speak?
I also use English as my second language. I’m also taking Korean classes every weekend because
of its widespread use and numerous benefits that come along with it. I am now able to hold
simple daily conversations in this language but I still have a long way to go.
3. What do you think is the best way to keep in touch with friends?
How distant you are from your buddies will determine this. If you live close together, arrange a
face-to-face meeting. I routinely use voice chat on the phone to communicate with my distant
friends. I favor this way of communication over the others since talk over the phone makes it
more intimate and engaging, allowing me to control my feelings much more readily.
4. Do people keep in touch differently now compared to 50 years ago?
Of course, nowadays, people utilize both the Internet and cell phones. These days, having one is
considered essential, and not having one would make you feel excluded. However, as I’ve
already stated, I believe that talking in person is preferable to using technology for
communication. There are several benefits to communicating in “traditional” ways.

Part 2: Describe a language other than English that you would like to learn

I would like to tell you about the story of learning a third language in my life after English, which is
Chinese.

Learning other language not only adds up your skills but also offers enormous benefits for your brain
and personal growth. Additionally, being multilingual expands your knowledge across the country’s
border and provides you easy access to the understanding of other cultures. Therefore, besides English,
Chinese sits high on my must-learn list due to its wide application and beautiful culture.

As I know, this language is spoken in many places in the world. Actually, Chinese is spoken not only in
China but also in many other countries such as the US or the UK by overseas Chinese. In fact, Chinese is
the most widely spoken language in the world (it is estimated that Chinese is spoken by more than 1
billion people all over the world). Therefore, I thought that learning Chinese could help brighten my
career paths. You know, today, trade ties between Vietnam and China have become stronger, so
employers in Vietnam tend to prioritize applicants who have a good command of Chinese. Furthermore,
I chose to learn Chinese mainly due to the similarity between Chinese and Vietnamese, especially in
pronunciation, so maybe learning this seems to be a piece of cake.

I started learning Chinese by attending an elementary course on Chinese since I was a second-year
student at uni. Every day after class, I spent at least 2 hours practicing listening and speaking in Chinese.
Writing in Chinese is quite tough because its alphabet is 100% different from Vietnamese but fortunately
with a memory like a sieve, I could still remember everything.

Part 3:

A. Language learning
1. Is it considered important in your country to learn foreign languages?
Well, it is essential to learn a foreign language because people need it in their day-to-day life while
communicating with others. Learning foreign languages will always benefit a person in one way or
another such as improving employment prospects, increasing open-mindedness, and cultural
awareness.

2. What, in your opinion, is the best way to learn a language?

There are many ways by adopting those; people can learn the foreign language easily. They can read
magazine newspapers, note down the difficult words, check them with the help of technology, and see
the pronunciation of those words. So regular practice of these things helps them in learning a foreign
language.

3. Why are some people seemingly better at learning languages than others?

Because they might find it simpler to understand, some individuals appear to be better at studying and
acquiring languages than others. These people are keen and persistent language learners who have
strong memory capacity. They already possess highly developed language flipping abilities or have a
wider range of linguistic knowledge to relate to the new language.

B. English as a global language

1. How do people in your country feel about English being the world language?

Well, I don’t know actually what they think about this but I suppose they simply accept it since English is
widely spoken for ages. And they all understand the importance of the English language in our lives since
everyone could encounter individuals from other cultures by speaking English despite coming from
different countries. Learning English is highly valued in a large number of nations, and my country is not
an exception. Because when learning a foreign language, in our case English, we could absorb a great
deal of cultural information as well as.

2. Do you think the culture of English-speaking countries, as well as the English language,
dominate the world?

Definitely yes. It goes without saying that English-speaking countries’ cultures, as well as the English
language, have an enormous influence on the world. From my perspective, if you know English, you can
go abroad and English gives you more opportunities to study in the best schools in the world. That's why
people are increasingly utilizing English as a second language. This means that learning English makes it
much easier to go to any destination which you have a preference for.
3. Why do you think people feel it is important to continue speaking their local languages?

Of course, yes. It is advisable for people to maintain our mother tongue. Since maintaining your first
language is critical to your identity and contributes to a positive self-concept. Otherwise, crucial
connections to family and other community members may be lost if the local tongue is not preserved.
The mother tongue must be spoken frequently because of its relevance; even if itis a rare language or no
longer relevant in your area, it must always be preserved.
