a) How will you define the energy level of the cell? What is the effect of energy level of a cell on metabolic reactions? b) Describe the metabolic pathway for the consumption of glucose when ribose sugar and NADPH both are required in excess. c) Describe the key crossroad for the utilization of carbohydrates, fats and proteins?

a) What is the regulatory strategy behind the diauxic growth phenomenon? b) What are constitutive and induced enzymes? With the help of suitable example explain the induction phenomenon. c) What is feedback inhibition? What are different types of feedback inhibition found an amino acid synthesis?

Assume that the cells have 12% nitrogen by weight and (NH4)2SO4 is the only nitrogen source. c) Aerobic degradation of benzoic acid by a mixed culture of microorganism can be represented by the following reaction C6H5COOH + aO2 + bNH3 → cC5H7NO2 +dH2O +eCO2 (i) Determine a, b, c, d and e if RQ=0.9 (ii) Determine the yield coefficient YX/S and YX/O2. (iii) Determine degree of reduction for the substrate and bacteria.

a) Draw the block diagram of a measuring instrument and explain its major elements. b) What are the phenomenons contributing to the dead zone? c) Differentiate between precision and accuracy. d) What are human errors? What are different types of human errors? e) Define the terms fidelity and dynamic error? 2. Attempt any four questions: (5x4=20) a) What are the methods used for level measurement? b) Describe the principle of mass spectroscopy? c) Describe the construction and principle of pH meter. d) Determine the flow velocity of water of density 1000 kg/m3 at the head of a pitot tube if it produces a pressure differential of 10kPa between the outlets. e) What is beer lamberts law? How will you determine the composition using this principle? 3. Attempt any four questions: (5x4=20) a) Solve the linear differential equation using Laplace transform: d2x/dt2 +2 dx/dt + x = u(t) provided x(0) = 0and x’(0) = 0 b) Find the Laplace transform of nth order differential of function f(t). c) Differentiate between servo and regulatory problem? d) What is feedback control system? Describe its physical elements. e) Define impulse function. Find the Laplace transform of impulse function. 4. Attempt any two questions: (10x2=20) a) Consider the continuously stirred-tank reactor. The reaction occurring is A → B and it proceeds at a rate r = kC0. Assuming constant density and constant volume V, derive the transfer function relating the concentration in the reactor to the feed-stream concentration. b) A step change of magnitude 4 is introduced into a system having the transfer function Y(s)/X(s) = 10/ (s2 +1.6 s +4) Determine: (i) Percent overshoot (ii) Rise time (iii) Maximum value of Y(t) (iv) Ultimate value of Y(t) c) Write short notes on: (i) Linearization (ii) Transportation Lag 5. Attempt any two questions: (10x2=20) a) What are various modes of control action commonly used? Compare the performance of these controllers for the close loop control system. b) Describe the response of first order system for P controller in feedback control system for step change in load. Mention the transfer functions for different elements. c) A pneumatic proportional controller is used in the process to control the cold stream outlet temperature within the range of 60 to 120 ̊ F. The controller gain is adjusted so that the output pressure goes from 3 psig (valve fully closed) to 15 psig (valve fully open) as the measured temperature goes from 71 to 75 ̊ F with the set point held constant. Find the controller gain Kc.
