1.1 Percentage
1. In a class of 50 students, 40% are girls. How many boys are there in the class?

A: Number of girls = 40% of 50 = (40/100) * 50 = 20

Number of boys = Total students - Number of girls = 50 - 20 = 30

2. If the price of a shirt is increased by 25%, and then the increased shirt's price is reduced
by 20%, what is the net percentage change in the price?

A: Let the original price of the shirt be 100.

After a 25% increase, the price becomes 100 + 25% of 100 = 100 + 25 = 125.

After a 20% reduction, the price becomes 125 - 20% of 125 = 125 - 25 = 100.

The net percentage change = [(Final Price - Original Price) / Original Price]
* 100 = [(100 - 100) / 100] * 100 = 0%

3. A smartphone's price decreases by 15% annually. If the initial price was Rs. 20,000, what
will be its price after two years?

A: After the first year, the price = 20,000 - 15% of 20,000 = 20,000 - 3,000 = Rs. 17,000.

After the second year, the price = 17,000 - 15% of 17,000 = 17,000 - 2,550 = Rs. 14,450.

4. In a school, 60% of students play cricket, 40% play football, and 30% play both. What
percentage of students play at least one of the two sports?

A: Percentage of students who play at least one sport = 60% + 40% - 30% = 70%.

5. A shopkeeper marks the price of an item 20% above the cost price and gives a discount of
10% on the marked price. Find the profit percentage earned by the shopkeeper.

A: Let the cost price be Rs. 100.

Marked price = Cost price + 20% of cost price = 100 + 20 = Rs. 120.

Selling price after a 10% discount = Marked price - 10% of marked price = 120 - 12 = Rs.
108.

Profit = Selling price - Cost price = 108 - 100 = Rs. 8.

Profit percentage = (Profit / Cost price) * 100 = (8 / 100) * 100 = 8%.

https://www.skillgrads.com/
6. In a company, 25% of employees speak English, 40% speak French, and 15% speak both
languages. What percentage of employees speaks only French?

A: Percentage of employees who speak only French = 40% - 15% = 25%.

7. A bookshop offers a 15% discount on all books. If the discounted price of a book is Rs.
340, find the original price of the book.

A: Let the original price be Rs. x.

After a 15% discount, the price = x - 15% of x = x - 0.15x = 0.85x.

Given that the discounted price is Rs. 340, we have 0.85x = 340.

x = 340 / 0.85 = Rs. 400.

8. A car depreciates by 10% each year. If the current value of the car is Rs. 810,000, what
was its value 3 years ago?

A: Let the initial value of the car be Rs. x.

After one year, the value = x - 10% of x = x - 0.1x = 0.9x.

After two years, the value = 0.9x - 10% of 0.9x = 0.9x - 0.09x = 0.81x.

After three years, the value = 0.81x - 10% of 0.81x = 0.81x - 0.081x = 0.729x.

Given that the current value is Rs. 810,000, we have 0.729x = 810,000.

x = 810,000 / 0.729 ≈ Rs. 1,111,111.11.

9. A company's revenue increased from Rs. 800,000 to Rs. 1,200,000. Find the percentage
increase in revenue.

A: Percentage increase in revenue = [(New Revenue - Old Revenue) / Old Revenue] * 100 =
[(1,200,000 - 800,000) / 800,000] * 100 = 50%.

10. In a survey, it was found that 70% of people like coffee, 60% like tea, and 40% like both.
What percentage of people like neither coffee nor tea?

A: Percentage of people who like neither coffee nor tea = 100% - (Percentage who like coffee
+ Percentage who like tea - Percentage who like both) = 100% - (70% + 60% - 40%) = 30%.

1.2 Time and Distance

1. A train travels at a speed of 72 km/h. How long will it take to cover a distance of 360 km?

A: Time = Distance / Speed

Time = 360 km / 72 km/h = 5 hours

2. A car covers a distance of 320 km in 8 hours. What is its speed in km/h?

A: Speed = Distance / Time

Speed = 320 km / 8 hours = 40 km/h

3. A cyclist travels a distance of 60 km at a speed of 20 km/h. If he wants to reduce the

travel time by half, what speed should he maintain?

A: Time = Distance / Speed

Original time = 60 km / 20 km/h = 3 hours

New time = 3 hours / 2 = 1.5 hours

New speed = 60 km / 1.5 hours = 40 km/h

4. A bus covers a distance of 240 km in 4 hours. If the bus maintains the same speed, how
long will it take to cover 480 km?

A: Time = Distance / Speed

Time = 480 km / (240 km / 4 hours) = 8 hours

5. A train travels at a speed of 90 km/h for the first 2 hours and then at 60 km/h for the
next 3 hours. Calculate the average speed of the train for the entire journey.

A: Total distance = (90 km/h * 2 hours) + (60 km/h * 3 hours) = 180 km + 180 km = 360 km

Total time = 2 hours + 3 hours = 5 hours

Average speed = Total distance / Total time = 360 km / 5 hours = 72 km/h

6. A car and a bike start from the same point and travel in opposite directions. The car
travels at 60 km/h, and the bike travels at 30 km/h. After how many hours will they be
240 km apart?

A: Relative speed = Speed of car + Speed of bike = 60 km/h + 30 km/h = 90 km/h

https://www.skillgrads.com/
Time = Distance / Speed

Time = 240 km / 90 km/h = 2.67 hours (approximately)

7. A boat takes 6 hours to travel a distance of 48 km downstream. If the speed of the

stream is 4 km/h, find the speed of the boat in still water.

A: Speed downstream = Speed of boat + Speed of stream

48 km = (Speed of boat + 4 km/h) * 6 hours

Speed of boat + 4 km/h = 48 km / 6 hours

Speed of boat + 4 km/h = 8 km/h

Speed of boat = 8 km/h - 4 km/h = 4 km/h

8. A person covers a distance of 120 km by walking. If he increases his speed by 50%, how
much time will he save to cover the same distance?

A: Original time = Distance / Speed = 120 km / Speed

New speed = 1.5 * Speed (50% increase)

New time = 120 km / (1.5 * Speed)

Time saved = Original time - New time = (120 km / Speed) - (120 km / (1.5 * Speed))

9. A car travels at a speed of 72 km/h. If it wants to cover a distance of 180 km in the least
possible time, what should be its speed?

A: Time = Distance / Speed

Time taken to cover 180 km at 72 km/h = 180 km / 72 km/h = 2.5 hours

To cover the same distance in the least possible time, the car should maintain its maximum
speed. So, the speed required = 72 km/h.

10. A train travels a certain distance at a speed of 50 km/h and returns at a speed of 60 km/h.
Find the average speed of the entire journey.

A: Let the distance be D km.

Time taken to travel the distance at 50 km/h = D / 50 hours

Time taken to return at 60 km/h = D / 60 hours

Total time = (D / 50) + (D / 60) hours

https://www.skillgrads.com/
Total distance covered in the entire journey = D + D = 2D km

Average speed = Total distance / Total time

Average speed = 2D km / [(D / 50) + (D / 60)] = (2 * 50 * 60) / (50 + 60) = 600 / 11 ≈ 54.55
km/h

months, C joined them with a capital of Rs. 25,000. At the end of the year, the profit
was Rs. 32,000. What is C's share in the profit?

A: Total capital = (A's capital * A's time) + (B's capital * B's time) + (C's capital * C's time)
= (30000 * 12) + (45000 * 12) + (25000 * 6)
= 360000 + 540000 + 150000
= 1050000

C's share = (C's capital * C's time) / Total capital * Total profit
= (25000 * 6) / 1050000 * 32000
= 150000 / 1050000 * 32000
= 4571.43

A's capital = 3k

B's capital = 4k

C's capital = 5k

A's time = 12 months (full year)

B's time = 12 months (full year)

C's time = 12 months (full year)

Total capital = (A's capital * A's time) + (B's capital * B's time) + (C's capital * C's time)

= (3k * 12) + (4k * 12) + (5k * 12)

= 36k + 48k + 60k
= 144k

A's increased investment = 50% of A's capital = 0.50 * 3k = 1.5k

B's increased investment = 25% of B's capital = 0.25 * 4k = k

Adjusted total capital = Total capital + (A's increased investment + B's increased
investment)

https://www.skillgrads.com/
= 144k + (1.5k + k)
= 144k + 2.5k
= 146.5k

C's share = (C's capital * C's time) / Adjusted total capital * Total profit

= (5k * 12) / 146.5k * 48000

= 60k + 84k + 96k
= 240k

A's investment = A's capital = 5k

A's share = (A's capital * A's time) / Total capital * Total profit

= (5k * 12) / 240k * 45000

= 60k / 240k * 45000
= 11250

A's investment is Rs. 11,250.

10. P, Q, and R started a business by investing in the ratio 4:5:6. After 6 months, P
withdrew 25% of his capital, while Q withdrew 20% of his capital, and R withdrew
15% of his capital. If the total profit at the end of the year was Rs. 72,000, what was
the total capital initially invested?

A: Let the common ratio be 'k'

P's capital = 4k
Q's capital = 5k
R's capital = 6k

P's time = 12 months (full year)

Q's time = 12 months (full year)
R's time = 12 months (full year)

Total capital = (P's capital * P's time) + (Q's capital * Q's time) + (R's capital * R's time)

https://www.skillgrads.com/
= (4k * 12) + (5k * 12) + (6k * 12)
= 48k + 60k + 72k
= 180k

P's withdrawal = 25% of P's capital = 0.25 * 4k = k

Q's withdrawal = 20% of Q's capital = 0.20 * 5k = k
R's withdrawal = 15% of R's capital = 0.15 * 6k = 0.9k

Adjusted total capital = Total capital - (P's withdrawal + Q's withdrawal + R's
withdrawal)

= 180k - (k + k + 0.9k)
= 180k - 2.9k
= 177.1k

Total profit = Rs. 72,000

The total capital initially invested = 177.1k (approx).

1.8 Ages
1. Ten years ago, the age of a father was three times the age of his son. If the father is
40 years old now, what is the current age of his son?

A: Let the son's current age be S years.

Ten years ago, the father's age was (40 - 10) = 30 years.
At that time, the father's age was three times the son's age:
30 = 3S
Now, solving for S:
S = 30 / 3
S = 10
The current age of the son is 10 years.

2. The sum of the ages of two friends, A and B, is 60 years. Five years ago, A was twice
as old as B. What are their current ages?

A: Let the current age of friend A be A years and friend B be B years.

From the given information, we can set up the following equations:
A + B = 60 ...(i) (The sum of their ages is 60)
A - 5 = 2(B - 5) ...(ii) (Five years ago, A was twice as old as B)
Now, solve the equations:

From equation (ii):

A - 5 = 2B – 10
A = 2B – 5

Substitute the value of A in equation (i):

2B - 5 + B = 60
3B = 65
B = 65 / 3 ≈ 21.67 (rounded to two decimal places)

Now, find A:

A = 2B – 5
A = 2(21.67) - 5 ≈ 38.34 (rounded to two decimal places)

The current age of friend A is approximately 38.34 years, and the current age of friend
B is approximately 21.67 years.

A: Let the lengths of the sides be 3x and 4x.
Given, 2(3x + 4x) = 70
Solving for x, we get x = 7.
So, the length of the longer side (4x) is 4 * 7 = 28 units.

9. The ratio of the salaries of two employees is 5:8. If the salary of the second
employee is 32,000 rupees, what is the salary of the first employee?
A: Let the salary of the first employee be 5x and the salary of the second employee be
8x.
Given, 8x = 32,000
Solving for x, we get x = 4,000.
So, the salary of the first employee (5x) is 5 * 4,000 = 20,000 rupees.

10. The ratio of the speeds of two cars is 4:5. If the first car covers 240 km in 4 hours,
how long will it take for the second car to cover 300 km at its speed?
A: Let the speed of the first car be 4x km/hr and the speed of the second car be 5x
km/hr.
Given, 4x = 240/4 => x = 15.
So, the speed of the second car is 5 * 15 = 75 km/hr.
Time taken by the second car to cover 300 km at this speed = 300/75 = 4 hours.

1.11 Time and Work
1. A machine can complete a task in 8 days. Another machine can complete the same
task in 12 days. If both machines work together, how many days will they take to
complete the task?

A: Let the total work be 24 units (LCM of 8 and 12). The first machine can do 24/8 = 3
units of work per day, and the second machine can do 24/12 = 2 units of work per day.
When they work together, they can do 3 + 2 = 5 units of work per day. So, they will
complete the task in 24/5 = 4.8 days (approximately).

2. Three workers can complete a project in 15 days. If one of the workers leaves after 6
days, how many more days will it take to complete the project?

A: In 6 days, the three workers complete 6 * (1/15) = 2/5 of the project. So, 1 - 2/5 = 3/5
of the project is left. With two workers now, they will complete 2/5 of the project in 2 *
(5/2) = 5 days. Therefore, it will take 5 more days to complete the project.

3. A contractor can finish a construction project in 20 days, working 8 hours a day. To

complete the project in 10 days, how many hours a day should the contractor work?

A: The contractor needs to complete the same amount of work in half the number of
days, so they should work twice the number of hours per day. 8 hours/day * 2 = 16
hours/day.

4. Two friends can clean a house in 6 hours. If they invite a third friend to help, they can
clean it in 4 hours. How long would the third friend take to clean the house alone?

A: Let the work be W, and let the efficiency of the first two friends be E1 and E2,
respectively. From the information given, we have E1 + E2 = W/6 (equation 1) and E1 +
E2 + E3 = W/4 (equation 2), where E3 is the efficiency of the third friend. Subtracting
equation 1 from equation 2, we get E3 = W/4 - W/6 = W/12. So, the third friend can
clean the house alone in 12 hours.

5. A tap can fill a tank in 10 hours. Another tap can empty the tank in 15 hours. If both
taps are opened together, how long will it take to fill the tank?

A: Let the capacity of the tank be LCM of 10 and 15, which is 30 units. The first tap fills
30/10 = 3 units per hour, and the second tap empties 30/15 = 2 units per hour. When
both taps are opened, they fill at a net rate of 3 - 2 = 1 unit per hour. So, it will take
30/1 = 30 hours to fill the tank.

6. A group of 5 painters can paint a house in 8 days. How many more painters should be
added to complete the work in 6 days?
https://www.skillgrads.com/
A: The total work is the same in both scenarios. Let the number of additional painters be
x. So, the equation is 5 painters * 8 days = (5 + x) painters * 6 days. Solving for x, we get
x = 10 additional painters.

7. A factory of 80 workers can produce 240 toys in 12 days. If they work for 15 days,
how many toys can they produce?

A: The number of toys produced is directly proportional to the number of workers and
the number of days. So, the number of toys produced in 15 days will be 240 toys * 15
days / 12 days = 300 toys.

8. A contractor can complete a road project in 25 days by working 10 hours a day. If the
contractor works 12 hours a day, how many days will it take to complete the project?

A: The work required to complete the project is the same in both scenarios. Let the
number of days required when working 12 hours a day be x. So, the equation is 25 days
* 10 hours/day = x days * 12 hours/day. Solving for x, we get x = 20 days.

9. A machine can produce 300 widgets in 6 hours. How many widgets can it produce in
10 hours?

A: The number of widgets produced is directly proportional to the number of hours

worked. So, the machine can produce 300 widgets * 10 hours / 6 hours = 500 widgets
in 10 hours.

10. A project requires 15 workers to complete in 20 days. If the project deadline is

reduced to 12 days, how many more workers should be hired to meet the deadline?

A: The total work is the same in both scenarios. Let the number of additional workers be
x. So, the equation is 15 workers * 20 days = (15 + x) workers * 12 days. Solving for x,
we get x = 25 additional workers.
