The Conflict In Ramona
In Helen Hunt Jackson s masterfully woven tale, Ramona, the main conflict seen is
man vs. society. The story takes place in the early 19th Century, during the time of
American settlement in Old California. Ramona, the main character, is a young girl
growing up under the care of a woman named Senora Moreno. Due to the fact her
father was Irish and her mother an Indian, Ramona finds that she is faced with a
society that does not always look on Indians with a friendly eye. Even the Senora finds
it incredibly difficult to feel any kind of compassion for Ramona, and bears no lovefor the
girl. She often treats her coldly and only does what is necessary for her well being
because of a promise she made. The conflict first makes its appearance when Ramona
falls in love with Alessandro, a handsome Indian working on the Moreno estate. Upon
discovering their forbidden love, Senora Moreno wastes no time in showing her severe
disapproval of the pair s affection for each other, and does everything in her power to
prevent the two from marrying. After a time of enduring the Senora s cruel attempts at
destroying her love for Alessandro, Ramona finally leaves the only home she has ever
known to elope with her beloved.
The conflict begins to develop after Ramona and Alessandro leave, and begin to
encounter obstacles that stem from a society that possesses a general dislike of Indians.

Huckleberry Finn is one of the most educationally required novel for students to read
while in school. Although it is a very renowned piece of literature. It has received its
fair share of extensive and bitter criticism. Back in the nineteenth century the book
was most commonly described as coarse, vulgar, irreverent, and unrefined. For every
negative review there is just as many positives, and whether it s good or bad reviews

Twain wrote this book, he wrote it with a strong critical view of culture and society in

These articles contrast because the article by Chicago Tribune was more about
specific events in the story where as the article by Mintz was all over the place and
talked about a lot of things. Another reason they contrast is because Mintz wrote more
factual things and talked about the process of the book and thinks around the book
where as Chicago Tribune talked more about the contents of the book and pulled
quotes from the story. The final reason they contrast is because when Chicago talks
about the racism they go more indepth with it and brought up the words he used and
how he counteracted them with his action when he helped his ex slave friend.
Whereas Mintz only skimmed through the topic and then moved on to something

life was the Korean War ended. It ended July 27th, 1953 which was the year Mintz was
born. Another event that occurred when Mintz was alive was in 1994 when Nelson
Mandela became the first black president of South America. The final event was in
1964, this was the year the Civil Rights Act was passed. It banned any use of
discrimination and changed the way black and white people saw each other. A historic
event that happened during the year the Chicago Tribune wrote its article was in 2002.
This event was a series of shootings in a span of three weeks from DC to Maryland to
Virginia. A man killed 10 people and injured 3, he was known as the DC Sniper.
