Cultivating a Growth Mindset

What is this worksheet?

Use this worksheet to understand what a growth mindset is and the actionable
steps you can take in order to cutlivate a growth mindset.

STEP 1: UNDERSTAND WHAT A MINDSET IS

Mindets are a collection of thoughts and beliefs that shape one's thought habits—
and thought habits affect how you think, what you feel, and what you do.

Your mindset influences how you make sense of the world and how you make sense
of yourself. It can be considered as the lens through which you interpret your
experiences.

A growth mindset is the belief that abilities and intelligence can be developed
through dedication and hard work, creating a love for learning and resilience that is
essential for great accomplishment.

A fixed mindset, on the other hand, is the belief that intelligence and abilities are
static traits and cannot be significantly developed, leading to a desire to appear
smart rather than embracing challenges and learning from them.

STEP 2: ACKNOWLEDGE THE IMPORTANCE OF

A GROWTH MINDSET
Having a growth mindset is a prerequisite for success.

When inevitable challenges and failures arise from the pursuit of a goal, your
response to a challenge or failure is what dictates your chance of success.

Students with a growth mindset will aim to accept and embrace these difficulties.
They will also tend to be more proactive by reflecting and adjusting their processes.

Students with a fixed mindset will aim to avoid these difficulties in the first place.
When faced with difficulty, students with a fixed mindset will try to mitigate their
difficulties. As a result, they are not able to achieve the goals they set out for
themselves. This is because they are constantly pulling away from the inevitable
struggle and difficulty associated with achieving their goals .

STEP 3: DEVELOP A GROWTH MINDSET
By reading Step 1 and Step 2, you should understand the importance of a growth
mindset when it comes to achieving your goals. Step 3 is about the actionable
things you can do in order to develop a growth mindset.

Engage in self-reflection after trying out new approaches or having new

experiences. This template of reflection can be applied to trying out a new form
of note-taking or for a recent exam that you sat.

What do I want to reflect on?

How did I feel?
What aspects went well?
What didn't go as well?
Why didn't they go as well?
How do I tend to act in these situations?
What can I do next time to improve?

Answer each question in as much detail as possible. If you’re complacent with this
reflection, you won’t get as much benefit! Below is an example of a good reflection
and a bad reflection.

Example of a good reflection:

What do I want to reflect on?

I was able to get a 85% on my science exam. I want to reflect on my exam
preparation process.
What aspects went well?
For my preparation, what went well was my consistency. I noticed that I was
able to get my revision done every day by reducing my procrastination.
My motivation levels were also pretty good. I was studying with friends and
there was always a level of healthy competition to keep us going.
What didn't go as well?
My note-taking process wasn’t the best. What happened was that I had
forgotten a lot of my notes towards the last few weeks and days before my
exam. Therefore, I spent a lot of time retaking notes. This reduced the amount
of time that I could spend on practice papers.
Why didn't they go as well?
After watching one of the videos on the iCanStudy channel, I realised that my
notes were too memorisation-heavy. The notes were based on rote-
memorisation and there was no higher-order learning at all.

How do I tend to act in these situations?
When it comes to note-taking, I tend to have this belief that spending more
time on notes leads to better learning. However, spending more time on
something doesn’t always guarantee success. In fact, there could be others
spending significantly less time on note-taking who are performing better.
What can I do next time to improve?
For my next exam, my note-taking will be done using higher-order learning
and non-linear note-taking. I want to reduce the amount of time I spend on
notes and increase the amount of learning I get.
Get more feedback from my friends who are efficient in their learning
systems. This way I can learn to become more efficient too.

The reason this reflection is an example of a good reflection is because:

It is in-depth and focused on the processes, not just the outcomes. The student
talks about their revision process, note-taking process and their time
management.
The student has consulted external material and resources to come to a
judgement about their system. They watched one video on the iCanStudy
YouTube channel and got expert insight into their study system.
They are not biased during the reflection. They are trying to get as many
perspectives on their system as possible.

Example of a bad reflection:

What do I want to reflect on?

I did really badly in my exam. I got a 75% and I wanted a 90%
What aspects went well?
Nothing really went well, just the fact that I was able to study, but everyone
else already did this.
What didn't go as well?
A lot of things didn’t go well. I noticed that I was getting very tired, but my
peers were still able to study. They studied many more hours than I did, and
as a result, they got better.
Why didn't they go as well?
I feel as if I was procrastinating too much.
How do I tend to act in these situations?
I tend to study fewer hours than my peers due to procrastination.
What can I do next time to improve?
I need to become more motivated and study more hours. I can do this by
reducing procrastination.

The reason this reflection is an example of a bad reflection is because:
The reflection is quite brief, it lacks enough detail for any actionable
improvements to be suggested.
This student is too focused on the outcome. They talk about their bad grade but
talk about their grades in isolation. There is no dissection of their note-taking,
time management or any other related processes.
This student has already entered the reflection, thinking that they need to spend
more time studying. This is a poor reflection because more studying does not
necessarily lead to more beneficial learning outcomes. This is also a missed
opportunity to reflect on their processes and try to make them more effective.
