SECTION-I

1. A hollow sphere of radius a carries a total charge Q distributed uniformly over its surface. A
small area dA of the sphere is cut off. Find the electric field at the centre due to the remaining
sphere.
2. (i) Two infinitely long line charges each of linear charge density  are placed at an angle  as
shown in figure. Find out electric field intensity at a point P, which is at a distance x from
point O along angle bisector of line charges.

(ii) Repeat the above question if the line charge densities are  and –as shown in figure. 

3. A thread carrying a uniform charge  per unit length has the configuration shown in figure a
and b. Assuming a curvature radius r to be considerably less than the length of the thread, find
the magnitude of the electric field strength at the point O.

4. The linear charge density on upper half of semi-circular section of ring is  and that at lower
half is – . The direction of electric field at centre O of ring is :

7. Two particles A and B, each carrying a charge Q, are held fixed with a separation d between
them. A particle C having mass m and charge q is kept at the middle point of the line AB.
(a) If it is displaced through a distance x perpendicular to AB, what would be the electric force
experienced by it.
(b) Assuming x << d, show that this force is proportional to x.
(c) Under what conditions will the particle C execute simple harmonic motion if it is released
after such a small displacement ? Find the time period of the oscillations if these conditions are
satisfied.

AB.

9. Two identical conducting spheres having unequal charges q1 and q2 separated by distance r. If
they are made to touch each other and then separated again to the same distance. The

1. A rigid ring of mass 2m and radius R carries charge Q which is uniformly distributed

plane of ring.
(B) Now a point charge having charge Q0 is placed at centre of ring .Then, find change in
tension developed in the ring.
(C) A negative point charge having charge -Q0 and mass m is slightly displaced from
centre of ring by distance x0 in a direction perpendicular to plane of ring and released.
Then, find time period of oscillation of ring.
(D) Now, ring is fixed and a positive point charge particle having charge Q0 and mass m is
slightly displaced by distance x0 in the plane of ring and released .Then, find
maximum speed acquired by the particle.
(E) Now ring is free to move. The one end of six identical elastic thread of negligible
length and elastic force constant ‘K’ obeying Hook’s law are connected to particle
having positive charge ‘Q0’ and mass ‘m’ placed at centre of the above uniformly
