Flight with 153 Passengers Veers Off Course After Both Pilots Fall Asleep in
Cockpit
By Escher Walcott
The passengers of the Indonesian aircraft were left unharmed in the incident, which took
place in January. After two pilots on a local airliner fell asleep and took the aircraft off
course, an investigation is underway in Indonesia. The pilot in command and the
secondary pilot on a Batik Air flight from Kendari, Indonesia, to Jakarta, the nation's
capital, fell asleep on January 25, sending the aircraft in the wrong direction, according
to a report by the National Transportation Safety Committee of Indonesia.
About an hour and forty-five minutes into the flight, the Airbus A320 carrying 153
people went off course when the secondary pilot, who had taken over flying duties from
his colleague while he napped, also fell asleep. The 28-year-old copilot was reportedly
tired after tending to his 1-month-old twin babies at home with his wife. The co-pilot
was told to report back when the aircraft was "clear from bad weather conditions" and
stayed in communication with Jakarta air traffic control using radio communication while
experiencing "light turbulence" while operating the aircraft. A few moments later the co-
pilot fell asleep, the report stated.
The pilots did not respond when Jakarta air traffic control tried to reach them again. The
co-pilot eventually became aware that the aircraft had deviated from the flying line after
28 minutes. After arousing the 32-year-old pilot in command, the aircraft made a safe
landing in Jakarta. The event did not injure any of the passengers.
The report further stated, "There was no damage to the aircraft and no injuries sustained
in this incident." The New York Times was able to acquire a statement from Batik Air
stating that the pilots had been temporarily suspended after the event. The results of the
medical examinations, which determined the pilots' fitness to operate the aircraft, were
inconsistent with what actually transpired.
As reported by the BBC, M Kristi Endah Murni, Indonesia's head of air transport,
expressed the view that Batik Air ought to give its crew members greater consideration
during their rest time after the incident. In reply, Batik Air stated that it "operates with
adequate rest policy" and that it was "committed to implement all safety
recommendations," according to the outlet.
