1. Identify and explain the different dimensions of gender.
Why do you think that
these dimensions are important? ● Body. Most societies view sex as a binary concept, and equate a person’s sex with their gender. Masculinity and femininity are equated with certain physical attributes, labeling us as more or less a man or woman based on the degree to which those attributes are present. This gendering of our bodies affects how we feel about ourselves and how others perceive and interact with us. ● Identity. Identities typically fall into binary, non-binary and ungendered. Gender is an inherent aspect of a person. Individuals do not choose their gender, nor can they be made to change it. A person’s gender identity can correspond to or differ from the sex they were designated at birth. ● Social. Social gender includes gender roles and expectations and how society uses those to try to enforce conformity to current gender norms. Expectations regarding gender are communicated through every aspect of our lives, including family, culture, peers, schools, community, media, and religion. 2. Provide and describe at least five gender stereotypes that are common in Filipino culture . Is it possible that in a society there are no stereotypes? ● (1) Only women should learn how to do house chores. (2) Men are supposed to go to work and women are supposed to stay inside the house. (3) Men don't cry. Crying is for women. (4) Women are too emotional, which makes them incapable of leading. (5) Women are supposed to be dominated by men. ● Societies have been built around stereotypes for thousands of years—they are a part of our collective identity as humans. However, in recent years we have seen an increased resistance to these types of images in politics and media. We have seen movements like #MeToo and Black Lives Matter fight against gender stereotypes and racist tropes in Hollywood productions and news stories alike. These movements have led us to question how much power these stereotypes really hold over us as individuals and as a society at large. 3. Comment on the following statement, "there should just be two, man and woman only in the society…" How do you think that in a globalized world people continuously define and redefine gender. ● In my opinion, it is a close minded belief for people who are stuck in the conservative era. The world is changing and developing so are the people living in it. We should not limit ourselves to a belief that is unprogressive and discriminates. One's gender is not defined by anyone. There is no society that has only two genders. Billions of people are living and these people have their own gender to define. ● In a globalized world, people are constantly redefining and redefining gender. This is due to the increased mobility of individuals, which allows them to define their identity in different ways. Also, this is because gender is not static, but rather fluid. The way in which people identify themselves as males or females can change over time, and the way in which they are treated will also change accordingly.
