Theory and Practice of Counseling (PSY632) Assignment No. Question No. 01 (10 marks) Identify and describe two beneficial motives of counselor to enter the counseling profession from Given scenario: Answer: Humanism 5 It is one of the beneficial motives to enter in the counseling profession. In my opinion, it is the most important aspect to enter in this profession. Humanistic counseling recognizes the uniqueness of every individual. It assumes that everyone has an innate capacity to grow emotionally and psychologically towards the goals of self- actualization and personal fulfillment. By using this approach counselor helps his client to create self awareness and drive him towards his potential. He empowers the client and helps him to grow. This self growth heals his emotional pain. This is very useful even in channelizing the negative energy into positive side to move on and achieve something which gives him sense of accomplishment. Sometimes clients are stuck at some developmental stage and this approach is very beneficial for client to build his capacity and become a better human who can create a world around him with positive thinking. It improves the functioning of the client in everyday life and creates better insight to solve his problems more efficiently in future by himself. It gives him strength and makes him able to face the challenges of life with more courage and confidence. When a client moves towards his self actualization, this also increases his self esteem that he is a capable person and he can attain what he wants in his life. Nothing is impossible, if he move on and work on it. Commitment to Competence 5 Another beneficial motive of an effective counselor which I gauge from given scenario is his commitment to his work. This covers many areas; I will discuss them one by one. Firstly, a committed counselor tries his best to help the client and for that he prepares his work and applies different strategies to solve the problem of the client with the help of whatever theoretical orientation he uses, he utilizes it proficiently. Secondly, he always honestly evaluates the counseling process, he sets some goals to achieve, study the case well and work with professional competence with his client. Thirdly, he maintains the confidentiality and follows the ethical standards. He is ready to seek out peer supervision to evaluate his efficiency. He always works within boundaries. He always acts in the best interest of the clients. Last but not least, Professional competence involves working with client population for which he has been properly trained, maintaining training and education throughout his career, and identifying and addressing personal experiences or internal problems that can affect our ability to be effective counselors.
Question No. 02 (10 marks)
Identify and describe two harmful motives of counselor to enter the counseling profession from the given scenario: Answer; Seeking intimacy 5 The first harmful motive which is mentioned in the given text is to enter in the counseling profession to find an opportunity for psychological closeness which is very inappropriate and against the standards of ethics. It is clearly mentioned in recent code of ethics by APA and ACA that counselor should work within the boundaries of his profession. Counselor work is to facilitate the client rather give him more psychological pain. His job is to enhance coping skill in his client, not make any such relationship which makes him dependent on him. He should understand the client time and even money which spent on the sessions is valuable. He should always work in the best interest of his clients rather seeking help from him. His work is to facilitate the client s potential and make him able to grow and improve his interpersonal relationships and even work on his problematic behaviors, not to create emotional dependency in him that the client would unable to move on and ready to terminate . As it is the professional ship, it should never affect client s personal relationship rather counselor job is to improve client s social skills and maximize an individual possible freedom within limitations that the client would be able to make his decisions by creating insight the issues which are hindrance in the growth of a client. If any counselor enters in this profession just for the sake of his own emotional and psychological help then I recommend him to take sessions from any effective counselor himself before entering in this profession. Unresolved Emotional Pain 5 Second harmful motive which is mentioned in the scenario is counselor s own unresolved emotional pains. If some issue is unresolved, the counselor would not like to face that issue when he encounters that. It is hard for him to help the client rather he himself seeks help from him. This is very much injustice with the profession as client himself comes with certain problems, he expects from the counselor to help him in a professional way that he would come out from problem state of mind. But if the counselor himself has some developmental issues and unsolved business, he could not provide him the required help and unable to introduce any therapeutic interventions as per need of individual client. This is again unethical and against the professional integrity to misuse the job and stay in it just for the sake of his feelings to be nurtured himself as the client comes their purposely and with the feelings of trust that it is the platform where he has been listened without any judgment and entertained according to his needs and requirements. As counseling clients are usually not mentally ill, they just need someone who direct them towards future goal and help them to come out if they are stuck or facing any challenge which no one outside is ready to listen and understand that they go through internally. In other words, no one is ready to understand their frame of reference and imposing on them external frame of reference. Usually these clients have some internal battle going on and this point they need empathy, positive regard and genuineness (which are the core principles of client centered therapy) form the counselor side. The person who conducts the counseling interview should be authentic and real. He should not use this profession for his personal requirement and needs. Otherwise if client loses his confidence on the person sitting in front of him and in the result if he took any wrong step, this must be consider the negligence of the counselor who does not deal him competently as a professional. And another drawback is that many people can lose the trust, never come back and definitely, they never suggest other to seek help from any other counselor even. This will go against the growth of the profession and ruin the reputation of the counseling profession overall.
