IV. PROCEDURES
A. Introduction Review:
The teacher will ask question about the previous lesson:
Teacher: What are the two forms of equation in writing the quadratic function?
Student: General Form and Standard Form
Teacher: What is the pattern of General Form?
Student: y=ax2+bx+c
Teacher: How about the Standard Form?
Student: y= a(x−h)2 +k
Teacher:. How to transform quadratic function from general form to vertex form?
Student: 1. Group the x's together
2. Factor out “a” from the terms with x
3. Completing the square
4. Factoring the square of binomial

Teacher: Transform the function y= 2 x 2+ 4 x−3 into Standard/Vertex Form.

Student: y= a( x−h)2 +k
Teacher: Please explain it to the class
Student:
y= 2 x 2+ 4 x−3
y= (2 x 2+ 4 x)−3
y= 2(x2 + 2x +1) – 3 -2 (b/2)2 = (2/2)2 = 1
y= 2(x+1)2 - 5

B. Development
Activity 1: Be My Concept Creator

The teacher will present different situations/ images, then the students will determine the concept
behind the term presented.

Term1- PARABOLA

Teacher:
Concept-The opening of the graph of quadratic function
is_____

Student: Upward and Downward

Term 2- VERTEX

Teacher:

Concept 2.1- The vertex is _______ of the graph

Hint : the time at which a situation starts to change in way

Student: Turning Point

Teacher: Concept 2.2: If (h,k) is the vertex, How to find the value of (h,k)?

Student: h is the x-coordinate and k is the y-coordinate

Teacher:

Concept 2.3: If the graph opens upward the, vertex is

(Highest/Maximum or Lowest/Minimum ) point.

Student: Lowest/minimum
Teacher:

Concept 2.4: If the graph opens downward the, vertex is

(Highest/Maximum or Lowest/Minimum ) point.

Student: Highest/Maximum

Term 3- Axis of Symmetry

Teacher:

Concept 3.1- The axis of symmetry is a____________

Hint : it is like a line bisector

Student: It is a line which divides the graph into two equal parts. Therefore, one half of the graph is
a reflection of other half

Teacher:

Concept 3.2- The formula of axis of symmetry is ______.

Hint : Find the relationship between the vertex and the equation axis of symmetry.

Student: X=h
Term 4- Domain

Teacher:

Concept 4- The domain of the quadratic function is ______

1. y = (x – 2)2 + 4 Domain: All real numbers/ {x:x∈ R }

2. y = (x + 3)2 – 4 Domain: All real numbers/ {x:x∈ R }

3. y = (x – 1)2 – 3 Domain: All real numbers/ {x:x∈ R }

Student: The domain of quadratic function is always the set of all real numbers

Term 5- Range

Concept 5- The range of the quadratic function is ______

Hint : Determine the relationship of opening of the graph, value of k and the range
Student: If it opens upward, the range is the set {y:y ≥ k }; if it opens downward, then the
range is the set {y:y ≤ k }

Teacher: Please summarize your findings in our activity.

Student:
1. The opening of the parabola is either upward or downward
2. Vertex is the turning point and denoted by (h,k) which can be either maximum or minimum. The
value of h is the x coordinate and k for the y-coordinate. It is maximum if the parabola opens
downward and Minimum if it opens upward.
3. The axis of symmetry is a line which divides the graph into two equal parts with a formula of x=h
4. The domain of a quadratic function is the set of real numbers.
5. The range of a quadratic function depends on whether the parabola opens
upward or downward.
For upward, {y:y ≥ k }

For downward: {y:y ≤ k }

Teacher: Excellent. You did a great job.

-----end of activity 1------

Activity 2: Whatis the label of our relationship?

Using the Geogebra, the students will determine the relationship of the value of “a”;
“h” and “k” to its graph. The students will observe how the graph changes as “a”;
“h” and “k” changes.

Teacher: Class, please observe the graph in the GeoGebra software.

: After observing, kindly answer the following guide questions.
1. How did you find the activity?
2. How the value of “a”; “h” and “k” affects its graph?
3. What would be your Conclusion?

Student: Yes. Sir

Teacher: Situation Number 1: The Value of “a” and the graph

A. The absolute value of “a” and the width of the graph of parabola.
B. The sign of the “a “and the direction of the graph of parabola.
Student: In the graph of y = ax2 + bx + c or y= a(x-h)2 +k, the larger the |a| is, the
narrower is the graph.
Student: For a >0, the parabola opens upward, meanwhile, For a < 0, the parabola
opens downward.

Teacher: Situation Number 2: The Value of “h” and the graph

Student: In the graph of y = ax2 + bx + c or y= a(x-h)2 +k, If h > 0, it slides to the right
meanwhile, if h < 0, it slides to the left.

Teacher: Situation Number 3: The Value of “k” and the graph

Student: In the graph of y = ax2 + bx + c or y= a(x-h)2 +k, If k > 0, it slides upward
meanwhile if k < 0, it slides downward.

-----end of activity 2------

Teacher: How did you find the activity?

Student: It is fun and entertaining. I understand easily because of the animation of the graph.
Teacher: What conclusion can we have drawn from this activity?
Student: Therefore, I better conclude that:
1. The value of “a” helps us to determine the width and the direction of the graph. In terms of width,
the graph becomes narrower when the absolute value of “a” gets bigger. In terms of the direction of
the graph, it opens upward when “a” is positive and opens downward when “a” is negative.
2. When h is positive, it slides to the right side of x-axis and, if h is negative, it slides to the left side of
x-axis
3. When k is positive, it slides upward or positive side of y-axis and, if k is negative, it slides
downward or negative side of y-axis.
Teacher: Excellent! You are a great Thinker!
C. Engagement I. Using the mentimeter, the teacher will engage the students in checking the knowledge if the

V.REFLECTION
I understand that:
-The Vertex is easy to find using (h,k) coordinate
-The Opening of the graph is either Upward or downward
-The Vertex is either Minimum or Maximum point
-The equation of axis of symmetry is determined using the formula of x=h
- The domain of quadratic function is the set of all real numbers
- The range of quadratic function depends on the opening of the graph

I realize that: it is easy to describe the graphs of quadratic function using its properties.
