Telescope
I) Answer in one sentence
1) What was Han lipershey's telescope called?
Ans. 'Spy Glass'
2) Which types of lenses are used in Hans Lippershey's telescope?
Ans. Hans Lippershey's telescope had a concave eyepiece aligned with a convex
objective lens.
3) Name four Galilean Moons?
Ans. Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto
4) What did Galileo found out by observing Venus & Mercury?
Ans. Galileo observed that Venus and Mercury showed moon like phases only
when observed through the telescope.
5) Galileo's observation was in support of which model of solar system?
Ans. Galileo's observations showed the 'Heliocentric' nature of our solar system,
meaning that the Sun is at the center and Earth moves around it.
6) Galileo's telescope was based on which principal of light?
Ans. Principle of Refraction
7) What are three major parts of refractor telescope?
Ans. Tube, objective lens and eye piece
8) Newtonian telescope is based on which principal of light?
Ans. Principal of reflection
9) What are major parts of a reflector telescope?
Ans. Tube, primary mirror, secondary mirror, eye piece and view finder.
10) What type of mirror is used in a Newtonian reflector telescope?
Ans. Concave mirror

Answer in 3 to 4 sentences
1) Write a short note on radio telescope?
Ans. A radio telescope is a specialized antenna paired with a radio signal receiver
used to detect radio waves from astronomical sources in the sky. The dish
of a radio telescope is made of metal and has a parabolic shape At the focal
point, the radio waves enter a sensitive receiver.
The receiver amplifies the waves and converts them into a signal that can
be stored in a computer. Astronomers use computers to turn this
information into data and details about the celestial object are obtained.
2) What is a view finder?
Ans. A view finer is a small separate tube with lenses on both sides fixed parallel
on the main tube of the telescope. A view finder helps the observer to find
the object in the sky and fix it in the center of the eyepiece.
3) What are major contributions of Isaac Newton in Science?
Ans. Isaac Newton is known for formulating the three laws of motion, his
discoveries in optics and physics of light and for having proposed the theory
of universal gravity.
4) What is an eyepiece?
Ans. The smaller lens or secondary lens opposite the primary lens is called the
Eye piece and this is the telescope's magnifying lens. This lens determines
the magnification of the image observed.
5) What is Objective lens in refractor telescope?
Ans. The primary optic of a refracting telescope is the convex lens fitted to the
front side of the tube. This cannot be moved and is the light gathering lens.
This lens is also called the primary lens.
6) What is Refraction?
Ans. Refraction is an effect that occurs when a light wave, incident at an angle
away from the normal, passes a boundary from one medium into another in
which there is a change in velocity of the light.
7) What is the difference between normal plain mirror and primary mirror of
telescope?
Ans. In a normal mirror there is a silver coating inside the mirror, but in a
primary mirror the silvering is done on the exposed concave surface of the
mirror for the purpose of maximum and pure reflectiveness of the object
being observed.
8) What is difference between1) Refractor & reflector telescope
Ans. A refractor telescope also named as A Galilean telescope is a simple
instrument made up
of a primary lens and a secondary lens used as an eyepiece, fixed in a tube.
A Reflector telescope is based on the principles of reflection and made up
of a primary
concave mirror and secondary flat mirror enclosed in a open and hollow tube
and the image of the object being observed can be seen through a peep hole
called an eyepiece made up of convex lenses.
9) What is difference between2) Primary mirror & Secondary Mirror
Ans. Primary mirror is the main optic of this telescope is a concave mirror used
for reflecting the object.
Secondary mirror is a small slab of glass, oval in shape and with a flat
surface used to catch the reflected image from the primary mirror.
10) What is difference between 3) Objective lens & Eyepiece
Ans. Objective lens: Objective lens is the primary optic of a refracting telescope
is the convex lens fitted to the front side of the tube. This cannot be moved
and is the light gathering lens.
Eye piece: The smaller lens or secondary lens opposite the primary lens is
called the Eye piece and this is the telescope's magnifying lens.
