8 (a) Draw the SFD for a cantilever carrying Uniformly Varying Load on the (5) 2 2

(b) A cantilever beam of length 2m carries an uniformly distributed load of (5) 2 4
3kN/m over a length of1.5m from its fixed end. Draw the shear force and
bending moment diagrams.

9 (a) Derive the relation between SF, BM and rate of loading. (5) 2 2
(b) A simply supported beam of span 10 m carries point loads 6 kN each at (5) 2 3
distance of 3 m and 5 m from left support. Draw the S.F and B.M
diagrams for the beam.

10 (a) State the assumptions made in deriving bending equation. (5) 3 2
(b) A timber cantilever 200 mm wide and 300 mm deep is 3 m long. It is (5) 3 4
loaded with a U.D.L of 3kN/m over the entire length. A point load of
2.7 kN is placed at the free end of the cantilever. Find the maximum
bending stress produced.

11 (a) A beam of T- section of flange 180 mm x 10 mm and centrally placed (5) 3 2
web of 10mm x 200mm is subjected to a shear force of 300 kN at a
section. Draw the shear stress distribution diagram.
(b) Sketch the bending stress distribution across the cross section of a (5) 3 2
rectangular beam section 230 × 400 mm subjected to 60 kN-m moment.
12 (a) Explain the procedure for drawing Mohr’s circle when the axial stresses (5) 4 2
in two mutually perpendicular directions (𝜎𝑥 , 𝜎𝑦 ) and the shear stress
(𝜏𝑥𝑦 ) at a point are given. Also, show the principal stresses on Mohr’s
circle.
(b) At a point in the web of a girder the bending stress is 60 N/mm2 tensile (5) 4 4
and the shearing stress at the same point is 30 N/mm2. Determine the
principal stresses and principal planes.

13 (a) Derive the expression for core of a solid circular section of diameter D. (5) 4 2
(b) A hollow circular section having external diameter 300mm and internal (5) 4 3
diameter 250mm carries a load of 100kN at an eccentricity of 125mm
calculate the maximum and minimum intensities of the stress in the
section.
