To REFORM the existing

VIOLENT RUMBLES and
transform it into one where
fraternities, professing the
UNIVERSAL BROTHERHOOD OF

EXISTENCE and its members to
be the ROLE MODELS of the
PHILIPPINE SOCIETY.

The Humble Beginning:
The Intervening Years
before the Foundation
The Humble Beginning
The Intervening Years before the Foundation
We all met during our sophomore year in the university. Classmates in a few general
curriculum courses as well as in some political science subjects, we were drawn together
by our common interests in political theory and philosophy and the intense desire to
make a mark in this vast academic community called UP.
We would often spend hours, in various spots all over campus, but often on the lawn area
outside the main library arguing and debating endlessly over theories of Machiavelli ,
Aristotle, Calvin, Aquinas or some forgotten philosopher. Mind you, we were not intellectuals,
just a bunch of guys fascinated by what countries and people do that eventually shaped this
world.
We came from different backgrounds. Resty (Alfonso), Tito , and Rod were Manila
bred guys while Talek, Roy, and Romy (Fortes) came from Midsayap, Cotabato,
Cardona, Rizal and Irosin, Sorsogon, respectively. All of us, I believe entered the
university as entrance scholars- the first and the last time any of us earned that
distinction.
It was a strong bond of friendship that over time extended to something more concrete,
acquiring a sense of purpose and mission that needed to be expressed.
The Humble Beginning
The Intervening Years before the Foundation
“The Political Science Club-the nucleus”
By our 3rd year, we became part of a bigger group of political science majors that
included most of the Founders Batch and the future founders of Tau Gamma Sigma.
It was an expanded social circle of friends and acquaintances, mostly classmates, who met
quite regularly and frequently. Some of the senior members of the group were already part of
the Political Science Club - one of the biggest (numbering more than a hundred
members) and certainly one of the most influential student organization in Diliman
during our time. We were invited to join the club and join we did.

The” Poli Sci Club” was also a rich fishing ground for recruits. As such, we were
approached either individually or as a group by all of them. It was a struggle not to yield to
the promise of lifelong camaraderie and years of “pleasant existence” in the College of Law (
and within the university itself) that was being offered by each.

None of us were convinced, though tempted, to give in to the pressures. We

refused to lose our identity nor give up what we started together.
The Humble Beginning
The Intervening Years before the Foundation

We knew what we wanted. We will build a new

brotherhood - an organization founded on a new
set of ideals, democratic in practice, liberal in
thinking, distinct but not elitist in its
perspective, rich in diversity, and most of all
open and tolerant in its views.
The Founding Years
Foundation of Tau Gamma Phi in U.P.
Establishing the frat was, for most of us, a work in progress. The first two years were
the hardest. Designing the framework, defining the standards, and building the
structure took a toll on everyone. Day after day we would meet to continue where we left
off. Weekends were spent updating each other on the progress of individual assignments and
consolidating inputs. Talek’s dorm room and Romy’s apartment somewhere in
Anonas were turned into work shops cum sleeping quarters.

From among the group, it was Resty Alfonso who took on the task of working on
the framework and standards that will ultimately define the organization. His
keen mind and sharp intellect made him the most suited for this role.

While Resty was neck deep in research, Talek, Roy, Romy, Tito, and Rod were
working feverishly to attend to the details of organizing. The design of
recruitment procedures, membership guidelines, initiation and
indoctrination processes as well as rituals made our heads spin. The organizational
structure from the head of the frat down to the lowest ranking officer had to conform to the
overall scheme of things. The devil is in the details, so the saying goes, and for all of us it
seemed like we would spend eternity figuring how to make sense of everything.
The Founding Years
Foundation of Tau Gamma Phi in U.P.

After months of research and countless meetings, Resty finally presented to us his opus- The
Tenets and the Code of Conduct. It was then, and still is now, a superbly written
doctrine that defines with utter simplicity and yet profoundly deep in meaning and
value what to us was the proper representation of true brotherhood.

He also introduced to us the Triskelion - a figure that showed three running legs
radiating and connected from a common center, which is symbolic of all the
dynamic forces in physics and from an Asian standpoint, a symbol that represents the three
aspects of dependent relationships which give existence to all functioning things. It was both
a fitting symbol and portrayal of our philosophy-encompassing the entire spectrum of our
beliefs and ideology.

Soon after, it was adopted unanimously by all six of us as our seal and emblem.

In 1972, Martial Law was declared in the Philippines, some university-based organizations
became targets of military harassment. The U.P. Tau Gamma Sigma struggled to balance
the continuous decline in recruitment against meticulous selection of recruits,
graduating members, and members who went somewhere else to finish college.

By early 1973, the sorority suddenly faded away from the campus scene. The relations
between U.P. Tau Gamma Phi and U.P. Tau Gamma Sigma became less enthusiastic. By 1974
the consensus of U.P. Tau Gamma Phi was to fill in the void left by the Lady
Triskelions.
The U.P. Sedarum Saudara (UPSS)
Formed in September 4, 1974
……malay origin meaning “Altogether Friends”
1. The first leader of the group was Jennifer "Jenny" Dumo
Alvarez as the 1st "Supreme Saudari" (74-75) with Juliana
"Julie" Torres as the 2nd "Supreme Saudari" (75-76) and
Charisse “Ayit” Gonzalez-Tootel (76-77) as the 3rd.
2. Became one of the most popular among sororities in UP.
Composed of the "beauty and brains" of the UP Diliman
campus' female students.
3. Popular Sedarum Saudara members: Maria Lourdes Carlos-
Fernando, Lilibeth Ranillo and Suzette Ranillo.
The U.P. Sedarum Saudara (UPSS)

UPSS changed their constitution prior to

1981 to maintain friendly relations as
opposed to brotherly relations with Tau
Gamma Phi, the fraternity leadership
decided to revive the Tau Gamma Sigma.

The UP Tau Gamma Phi

Triskelions are the keepers
of the Triskelion
flame. We are the bastion
of the true Triskelion
where the original ideals of
the fraternity are
expounded and followed,
devoid of any self-interest
Changes
• Standardized everything
across UP units but respects
the distinct culture differences
• One batch name across units
decided by the GTs during
every GT summit.
• Initial discussion about the
initiation process started in
reference to RA 8049 or Anti-
Hazing Law
• Triskelion Cares program
• No contact policy advocacy
Events that pave the way for the
no contact policy advocacy
• 1st GT Summit, purpose is we go
back to the original principles
• Different IR for each unit
• 1968, Founders Batch, no physical
contact
• 1969, Charter Batch, introduced the
paddle.
• Adopted 22.
• Revisit IR in 2014 due to
unfortunate events
• Explored the possibility of revising
the initiation procedure to be
compliant with RA 8049
Rationale and justification
in revising the IR
• RA 8049 otherwise known as the Anti-Hazing Law
• Adapt to change, traditions that are no longer appropriate and especially
prohibited may be revised/changed.
• Our belief in the principles expounded by the Tenets and Code of Conduct
bind us together, that’s why we are brothers/sisters, Triskelions.
• To become a member, understanding and embracing the Tenets and COC
should be indoctrinated.
• Indoctrination via pain is similar with torture.
• The paddle is just a tool, there are other ways to indoctrinate.
• UP - original ideals of the fraternity are expounded and followed, devoid
of any self-interest.
• To do what is right, good for the fraternity in the long-run.

The Extraordinary
Leader
Why the need to develop and become
extraordinary Triskelion leaders?

• To make chapter productive

• To become models in the community
• For project management
• To be able to help other Triskelions
• To prepare for future challenges
• To excel
• To become a shining example
• To be able to make good and right decisions
• To be able to make extraordinary projects and activities
Leaders can be Made

• The fraternity needs you to be strong and effective.

• There is a high correlation between leadership effectiveness

and the results that leaders produce.

• There is a huge difference between the merely good and the

extraordinary leader.

• The path to greatness as a leader is finding a small number

of your real strengths.
Extraordinary Leadership

• Analysis of over 20,000 leaders identified behaviors

that differentiate the best leaders from the least
effective.

• Many leaders mistakenly believe that the path to

greatness is in finding their least effective traits and
bring them up to acceptable range.

• Great leaders are defined by having a small number of

real strengths.
“Great leaders
are not defined
by the ABSENCE OF WEAKNESS,
but rather by the PRESENCE
OF CLEAR STRENGTHS.
The key to developing GREAT LEADERSHIP
is to BUILD STRENGTHS.”
Leadership potential can be
developed with EFFORT and PRACTICE
Leadership is not about a TITLE
or a DESIGNATION. It's about
IMPACT, INFLUENCE and
INSPIRATION. Impact involves
GETTING RESULTS, influence is
about SPREADING the PASSION
you have for your work, and
you have to INSPIRE your
team-mates and customers.
-Robin Sharma

command and control style of
leadership.

It makes the most difference in whether

leaders are considered extraordinary.

inspire people to rally around a change
and turn the experience

Tenets of the
Fraternity/Sorority

Code of Conduct
Tenets of the Fraternity
and Code of Conduct.
What is a TRISKELION?

One who has undergone admission process

and believes in the principles embodied

by the Tenets, and guided and

abides by the rules and regulations, stated in

the Code of Conduct, of Tau Gamma Phi /
Tau Gamma Sigma.
Tenets of the
Fraternity
Tenet Number 1 of 8

The TAU GAMMA PHI/TAU GAMMA SIGMA is the

Triskelions’ Grand Fraternity/Sorority, my
fraternity/sorority, the Supreme Fraternity/Sorority.

Ang TAU GAMMA PHI/TAU GAMMA SIGMA ay ang

Dakilang Kapatiran ng Triskelion, ang kataas-taasang
Kapatiran.
Tenet Number 1 of 8

TRISKELIONS’ GRAND FRATERNITY

• TRISKELIONS’
• Why not TRISKELION only?
• Why not TRISKELION’S (single possessive noun)?
• Why not TRISKELIONS (non-possesive plural)?

TRISKELIONS’ – possessive plural noun

This denotes that Triskelions BELONG to Tau Gamma Phi but no

SINGLE Triskelion can claim ownership of it.
(Tayo ay kasapi, hindi may-ari, ng Tau Gamma Phi.)
Tenet Number 1 of 8

• ONLY in UNITY and as a WHOLE can we claim

ownership of Tau Gamma Phi/Sigma!
• In UNITY (FRATERNITAS), there is STRENGTH (Fortis).
• VOLUNTAS – denotes our human nature; our freedom
to choose; our decisions, as Triskelions and as human
beings.
VOLUNTAS is our weakness yet it is what can make Tau
Gamma Phi/Sigma GRAND!
HOW? By making the right choices and decisions
(resulting to EXCELLENCE), we will be able to prove
that Tau Gamma Phi/Sorority is, indeed, a GRAND
fraternity/sorority.
Tenet Number 1 of 8

VOLUNTAS = decisions / choices in life

• As Triskelions, all our decisions and choices, actions,
reactions, and interactions REFLECT back to the
Fraternity/Sorority.
• Everything that we say, do, write, achieve, or develop
and gain, as human beings and as Triskelions, show
what kind of a fraternity Tau Gamma Phi/Sigma is.
• Tau Gamma Phi/Sigma ALWAYS gives us the right to
choose – FREEWILL (VOLUNTAS) – KALAYAANG
PUMILI!
• Ang tanong: PAANO BA NATIN GINAGAMIT ANG
KALAYAAN NA ITO? SA TAMANG PARAAN BA?
Tenet Number 1 of 8

Fact: VOLUNTAS is the most USED and ABUSED principle

• Triskelions use it as an excuse to evade obligations and
responsibilities (monthly dues, annual dues,
leadership, service, etc.).
• Triskelions use it to persuade or convince others to do
something wrong instead of doing something good or
right.
• Triskelions use it to make it look like what he/she is
doing or asking for is ALWAYS fraternity/sorority-
related (personal quarrels, rumbles, solicitations, etc.)
• Ang tanong: KAILAN AT PAANO NGA BA DAPAT
GAMITIN ANG VOLUNTAS?
Tenet Number 1 of 8

VOLUNTAS – Voluntary and Responsible Participation

• Mula sa pagiging neophyte, ay tinuruan na tayong

maglingkod; VOLUNTAS din ang prinsipyo na
nagsasabing tayo ay hindi PINILIT na sumapi sa
kapatirang TGP.
• Service to the fraternity, to our fellowmen, to the
institutions that we represent, and to our country, are
inculcated in us thru VOLUNTAS (voluntary and
responsible participation).
Tenet Number 1 of 8

My fraternity!

• Tau Gamma Phi/Sigma is mine to cherish, honor,

and love… never to own!
• We BELONG to the Fraternity/Sorority, the
Fraternity/Sorority does not belong to us; WE DO
NOT OWN IT!
• It is not about ownership! It is about
belongingness!
Tenet Number 1 of 8

The supreme fraternity!

• Tau Gamma Phi/Sigma is SUPREME because we regard it

as such.
• Non-Triskelions will NOT regard Tau Gamma Phi/Sigma as
supreme… UNLESS, we prove and show to them that we
are productive and good people.
• Our aim for EXCELLENCE is an obligation to prove that Tau
Gamma Phi/Sigma is the supreme fraternity/sorority!
• EXCELLENCE is a result of Voluntas (responsibility) and is
our key to SUPREMACY!
• EXCELLENCE is the new SUPREMACY!
Tenet Number 2 of 8

PRIMUM NIL NOCERE. First of all do not harm, let alone

in defense of self, for whatever cause man has come into
being, for whatever reason he exists, to whatever he is
destined, kin to all living creatures around him, man is
brother unto man.
Kapwa niya Tao.
Tenet Number 2 of 8

PRIMUM NIL NOCERE – original

PRIMUM NON NOCERE – grammatically correct in Latin

Tenet Number 3 of 8

DE GUSTIBUS NON DISPUTANDUM EST. Of likes and

dislikes there should be no disputing. Live and let live.

Sa mga nais at hindi man naging nais para sa atin, hindi

dapat magkaroon ng pagtatalo. Mabuhay ka at tulutan
ang iba na mamuhay ng payapa.
Tenet Number 4 of 8

Preserve yourself brawn, brain and blood.

Panatilihin ang iyong sarili, ang iyong katawan,

utak at dugo
Tenet Number 5 of 8

Brothers/Sisters I shall love and respect, their counsel

I shall heed.
Mga kapatid, dapat kong mahalin at igalang, ang
kanilang payo ay dapat kong pakinggan.
Tenet Number 6 of 8

The University of the Philippines is my Alma mater to

cherish and to honor; By its rules be governed and
guided.

Ang Unibersidad ng Pilipinas ay ang aking Inang

Paaralan, upang mahalin at parangalan; sa
pamamagitan ng kanyang mga patakaran ay
magpasaklaw at magabayan.
Tenet Number 6 of 8

Alma Mater = School

• OLD SCHOOL (technically) – THE 6TH TENET does not refer

to the chapter but to the school where one is studying.

• THE 6TH TENET means… “As a responsible student of my

school (alma mater), I shall cherish it, honor it, and
preserve it. I shall be guided and governed by the rules
and regulations of my school.”
Tenet Number 6 of 8

6th Tenet “WAS NEVER INTENDED” for TYM/CBC’s… sad

but true.
• To ensure and inculcate discipline, TYM/CBC’s are
SUPPOSED TO exist under the care and guidance of school-
based chapters.
• TYM/CBC’s were formed but with an agreement with
MMRC Gen Sec Monching Ocampo (1977; 1978 -
formalization of existence during Brod Monching’s term as
MMRC GenSec)
• That TYM/CBC Triskelions will be accepted on the
condition that they will enroll in college and their
school will become their alma mater (6th TENET).
Tenet Number 6 of 8

To accommodate CBC’s, T6 can be interpreted as the

community or barangay they live/belong to

• QUESTION: What rules and regulations will the members

abide to in CBC’s/TYM Chapters?

• ANSWER: The Barangay’s Local Code (Barangay Rules and

Regulations) and, of course, the fraternity’s Tenets and
Code.
Tenet Number 7 of 8

The Grand Triskelion/Lady Grand Triskelion is righteous,

just, and strong. He/She shall be obeyed.

Ang pinunong Triskelion ay matuwid, makatarungan at

matatag. Siya ay dapat na sundin.
Tenet Number 8 of 8

A Triskelion is a brother/sister unto his/her

fellow Triskelion.

Ang isang Triskelion ay kapatid sa kanyang

kapwa Triskelion.

IMPORTANT POINTS TO REMEMBER
1. Our LOYALTY is to the fraternity/sorority not to individuals.

2. The Tenets and Code of Conduct is the heart and soul of the
fraternity/sorority; we are brothers/sisters because we
believed and embraced the Tenets and COC, nothing more,
nothing less.

3. Go back to the original ideals; simplicity - don’t complicate

things by having your own interpretation.

4. We are now in the era of “EXCELLENCE.” This is “SUPREMACY”

in the Millenium/iGeneration age. Make an IMPACT, INSPIRE
others and LEAD – be extraordinary leaders.

5. We should channel our efforts and energy in making social

relevant activities/projects (Triskelion Cares) to uplift our
image; rather than engage in senseless debates on issues.

6. RESPECT and HUMILITY - We are all equal as Triskelions.
