2 Background of the Study

Plastic waste has emerged as a significant environmental problem globally,

with detrimental impacts on ecosystems, wildlife, and human health. The excessive

production and improper disposal of plastic waste have led to pollution in oceans,

landfills, and communities, posing challenges for waste management and

sustainability efforts worldwide. In the Philippines, the issue of plastic waste is

particularly pronounced, with the country being one of the top contributors to

marine plastic pollution. Addressing this issue requires innovative solutions that

not only focus on reducing plastic waste but also mitigating its environmental

footprint, such as developing odor reduction prototypes using coconut shell-based

materials to improve waste management practices and promote sustainable

initiatives.

Plastic waste pollution is a pressing issue in various settings, with schools

being one of the environments significantly impacted by the accumulation of

plastic waste. Schools generate a substantial amount of plastic waste daily,

including disposable bottles, packaging materials, and other single-use plastics.

The buildup of plastic waste in school environments not only contributes to

environmental pollution but also leads to unpleasant odors, posing health risks to

students and staff. Addressing this challenge, the development of a coconut shell-

based odor reduction prototype could provide an innovative and sustainable

solution to mitigate the odor and environmental hazards associated with plastic

waste in school settings.

Existing solutions to tackle the issue of plastic waste odor in school settings

include conventional methods such as incineration, landfill disposal, and chemical

treatments. However, these methods have limitations in terms of sustainability and

environmental impact. Incineration releases harmful pollutants into the air, while

landfill disposal leads to long-term soil and water contamination. Chemical

treatments, on the other hand, may introduce toxic substances into the

environment. In light of these challenges, the development of a coconut shell-

based odor reduction prototype presents a promising alternative that is eco-

friendly, cost-effective, and sustainable. By harnessing the natural properties of

coconut shells to absorb odors and neutralize pollutants, this innovative solution

has the potential to address the plastic waste odor issue in schools while

promoting environmental conservation.

The development of a coconut shell-based odor reduction prototype for

plastic waste offers an eco-oriented solution that is environmentally balanced and

sustainable. By utilizing the natural properties of coconut shells, which are

abundant and biodegradable, this innovative prototype can effectively absorb

odors emitted from plastic waste in school settings. The eco- friendly nature of the

coconut shell-based prototype ensures minimal environmental impact and

promotes a circular economy approach by repurposing a natural byproduct. This

solution aligns with the principles of environmental conservation and offers a cost-

effective, sustainable alternative to conventional odor reduction methods for

plastic waste in schools.

The development of a coconut (Cocos nucifera) shell-based odor reduction

prototype for plastic waste in Samar demonstrates an innovative and locally

sourced solution to address environmental challenges. By harnessing the natural

properties of coconut shells abundant in the region, this prototype offers a

sustainable and eco-friendly approach to reducing odors emitted from plastic

waste. The utilization of coconut shells not only provides an effective odor

reduction mechanism but also promotes the reuse of agricultural byproducts,

contributing to a circular economy model. This initiative in Samar showcases the

ingenuity of utilizing local resources to tackle environmental issues and

underscores the importance of community-driven solutions for a greener future.

The development of a coconut shell-based odor reduction prototype for

plastic waste holds immense significance in the realm of environmental

sustainability. This innovative solution not only addresses the pressing issue of

odor emissions from plastic waste but also underscores the potential of utilizing

natural resources for waste management. By harnessing the properties of coconut

shells, a locally available and renewable resource, this prototype exemplifies a

holistic approach towards mitigating environmental impact. Moreover, the

development of such a prototype highlights the importance of community-driven

solutions, promoting a sense of ownership and responsibility towards creating a

cleaner and greener environment. The utilization of coconut shell in reducing

odors from plastic waste not only showcases innovation but also serves as a model

for sustainable waste management practices moving forward.
