Chapter 1

PROBLEM AND IT’S BACKGROUND

1.1 Introduction

This topic focuses on finding effective methods to reduce or eliminate

unpleasant odor associated with plastic waste. This aims to develop a

prototype or solution that can effectively reduce the odor emitted from

plastic waste which is a common issue in waste management practices.

The study ”Development of Odor Reduction Prototype Using Recycled

Plastic Bottles” holds significant importance as it addresses two critical

environmental and social challenges: odor pollution and plastic waste

management. By focusing on the innovation of a product that filters odors

while utilizing recycled plastic materials, the research promotes

sustainability and encourages waste reduction. This study not only

contributes to reducing the environmental footprint of plastic waste but also

improves air quality in affected areas, thereby enhancing public health and

wellbeing. Moreover, the study empowers students, particularly the Grade

12 CSS Gawani students at Hinabangan National High School, by engaging

them in practical, eco-friendly innovation and problem-solving, fostering a

sense of responsibility towards environmental preservation.

The topic "Development of an Odor Reduction Prototype using

Recycled Plastic Bottles” is indeed urgent due to the escalating

environmental and public health challenges posed by plastic waste and odor

pollution. According to global reports, over 380 million tons of plastic are

produced annually, with a significant portion ending up in landfills,

waterways, and natural ecosystems, where it can persist for hundreds of

years. This accumulation not only harms wildlife but also leads to harmful

environmental conditions, including the release of toxic chemicals and

odors as plastics degrade. In urban areas, odor pollution from waste sites

and improper disposal of garbage creates health hazards, affecting air

quality and contributing to respiratory and hygiene issues. This study

addresses both these critical problems by proposing a sustainable solution

that can help reduce plastic waste while also mitigating odor pollution,

underscoring its relevance and timeliness.

1.3 Statement of the Problem

The development of a coconut shell biochar-based odor reduction

prototype for plastic waste presents a sustainable and eco-friendly solution

to address the challenges posed by increasing plastic waste. By utilizing

biochar, derived from organic materials like coconut shells, this prototype

aims to mitigate odor emissions from plastic waste, addressing

environmental and health hazards associated with improper waste disposal.

Through research and innovation in this area, the use of natural materials

for odor control in waste management can be promoted, contributing to

sustainable waste management practices globally.

1. How to develop a coconut shell biochar-based plastic waste odor

reduction? (Researchers)
2. What is the level of effectivity and efficiency of coconut shell biochar-

based prototype as plastic waste odor reduction? (Quantitative –

Survey)

3. What separates coconut shell biochar over other existing methods of

plastic waste odor reduction? (Researcher)

4. What is the level of user acceptance of coconut shell biochar-based

plastic waste odor reduction? (Quantitative – Survey)

5. Is there a significant difference in the level of user acceptance when

grouped according to profile?

1.4 Hypothesis of the Study

Here is a hypothesis formulation based on the study “Development of

Coconut (Cocos nucifera) Shell Biochar-based Odor Reduction Prototype on

Plastic Waste” Research Question: What is the level of effectiveness and

efficiency of the coconut shell biochar-based prototype in reducing odor

from plastic waste?

Null Hypothesis (H₀): There is no significant difference in odor

reduction when using the coconut shell biochar-based prototype on plastic

waste compared to not using it. The effectiveness and efficiency of the
coconut shell biochar-based prototype in reducing odor from plastic waste

are not significantly different from that of other materials or methods.

Alternative Hypothesis (H₁): There is a significant difference in odor

reduction when using the coconut shell biochar-based prototype on plastic

waste compared to not using it. The coconut shell biochar-based prototype

is significantly more effective and efficient in reducing odor from plastic

waste than other materials or methods.

1.5 Significance of the Study

Significance of the Study The study titled “Development of Coconut

(Cocos nucifera) Shell Biochar-based Odor Reduction Prototype on Plastic

Waste” holds significant value across various stakeholders:

Students: This study provides students with an opportunity to engage

in practical, solution-oriented research that addresses environmental

challenges. It enhances their understanding of sustainable practices and

introduces them to innovative waste management techniques. Additionally,

it fosters critical thinking and problem-solving skills, which are essential in

tackling real-world issues.

Teachers: For educators, the study serves as a resource for

integrating environmental science and sustainability into the curriculum. It

offers a concrete example of how scientific principles can be applied to

develop practical solutions to environmental problems. Teachers can use

this research to inspire students to explore interdisciplinary approaches,

combining science, technology, and environmental studies.

School: At the institutional level, the study aligns with the school’s

mission to promote sustainability and environmental stewardship. It

enhances the school’s reputation as a center of innovation and

environmental consciousness. The successful implementation of the odor

reduction prototype could also lead to a cleaner and more pleasant school

environment, reducing the Impact of plastic waste.

Administrators: School administrators can utilize the findings of this

study to support sustainability initiatives within the institution. The

development of the biochar-based prototype could be integrated into

broader waste management strategies, potentially reducing operational

costs related to waste disposal. Additionally, the study’s outcomes could be

used to secure funding or partnerships for further research and

development.

Community: The local community stands to benefit from the

implementation of the odor reduction prototype, particularly in areas where

plastic waste is a significant issue. By reducing odors associated with

plastic waste, the study contributes to improved air quality and a healthier

living environment. Moreover, it raises awareness of the importance of

sustainable waste management practices, encouraging community members

to adopt similar approaches in their own lives.Future Researchers: This

study lays the groundwork for future research in the field of sustainable

waste management and biochar technology. It provides a valuable reference

point for researchers looking to explore the potential of biochar in various

applications. The findings can inspire further investigations into the
