Table of measurements acquired and measured upon installing the broad crested weir inside the flume.

Trial No. Y0 + hw (cm) Y1 (cm) Qactual (lpm) H0 (cm) Qtheo (lpm) Cd

1 17.5 4.5 95 5.405 107 lpm 0.88557

2 18.5 5.4 125 6.488 141 lpm 0.88599

Breadth of Weir

b = 8.35 cm = 0.0835 m

Height of Weir

hw = 12.4 cm = 0.124 m
Characteristics of Flow over a Broad Crested Weir
The flow rate Q is given by

Q= y 1 v 1 b 1
Q=b √ ❑

Q = Flow rate of water passing through the flume (cubic meter per second)

Y1 = height above crest (meters)

V1 = velocity of water flow (meter per second)

B1 = bread height of weir (meter)

H0 = height of weir (meter)

g= gravitational constant (9.81 meter per second)

In some case given that the broad crested weir is not submerged (downstream water level is low), the
flow of water over a Broad crested weir may be assumed to be critical as it passes over the weir.

Hence: H 0 y 1− y 1=maximum

The actual flow over a Broad Crested weir will be less than the theoretical flow so the coefficient is
introduced into the equation.

Where Cd is the coefficient of Discharge i.e.

Qactual=Cd x Qtheoretical
The coefficient of discharge may be determined as

Actual Flowrate
Cd=
Theoretical Flowrate
Considering The Sharp crested weir was sitting at the bottom of the flume above the water flow, it was
in submerged state, therefore;
