Date of Teaching
I. Objectives:

At the end of a 60-minute class interaction, students should be able to:

a. define typhoon;
b. explain how typhoons develop;
c. identify the different tropical cyclone categories and the public
storm warning signals;
d. explain why Philippines is typhoon prone country; and
e. display a sense of awareness and preparedness in terms of calamity.

SENSE OF AWARENESS AND PREPAREDNESS

K to 12 Standards Addressed:

• Content Standard
The learners demonstrate an understanding of:
a. how typhoons develop;
b. the different tropical cyclone categories and the public storm
warning signals; and
c. why Philippines is typhoon prone country.

• Learning Competencies
The learners should be able to:
a. define typhoon;
b. explain how typhoons develop;
c. identify the different tropical cyclone categories and the
public storm warning signals;
d. infer why the Philippines is prone to typhoons; and
e. recognize the importance of being aware and prepared in
terms of calamity.

II. Subject Matter:

A. Topic: Typhoons

C. Materials: PowerPoint presentation, laptop, short video clip from YouTube

D. Science Processes Involved: Observing, communicating, and inferring

E. Science Concepts:
1. Hurricane – a tropical cyclone is a system of thunderstorms that are
moving around a center.
2. Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) – an area in the northwestern
pacific where PAGASA, the Philippines’ national meteorological
agency monitors weather occurrences.
3. Super Typhoon – the wind speed is greater than 200 kilometers per
hour (kph).
4. Tropical Depression – when the wind speed is between 35 to 64 kph
5. Tropical Storm – the wind speed is between 65 and 118 kph.
6. Typhoon – an extremely large, powerful, and destructive storm that
occurs especially in the region of the Philippine or the China Sea. It
has a wind speed of 119 to 200 kph.

III. Procedure:
A. Preliminary Activities:
1. Routine
a. Greetings
b. Prayer
c. Checking of Attendance
d. Setting of Classroom Standards
e. Review of Previous Lesson (Elicit)

Looking Back

Direction: Recall what students did in the previous lesson.

Write one or two sentences describing what they’ve learned.

I’ve learned that…

B. Motivation (Engage)

Activity 1: FACT OR BLUFF

Instructions: Statements will be flash on the screen. Identify whether the

given statements are FACT or BLUFF.

1. According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and

Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), about 22 tropical
cyclones enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility each year.
(BLUFF)
2. We have to be knowledgeable about tropical cyclones if we want
to prevent the loss of more lives. (FACT)
3. Tropical depression, tropical storm, typhoon, and super typhoon are
categories of tropical cyclones. (FACT)
4. The term typhoon is used in the northwestern and northeastern part
of the Pacific Ocean. (BLUFF)
5. Tropical cyclones need water vapor in order to form. (FACT)
C. Presentation of the Lesson

Based on the activity “FACT or BLUFF”, the teacher will ask the students
what the lesson is all about.

D. Development of the Lesson (Explore and Explain)

1. Typhoon

Activity 2: Lost Identity

Instructions: Six statements will be flash on the screen; students will
choose four statements that will describe the characteristics of typhoon.

Guide Questions:
What is typhoon?
How typhoons develop?
Can you differentiate typhoons, hurricanes and cyclones?

2. Tropical Cyclone Categories

a. Tropical Depression
b. Tropical Storm
c. Severe Tropical Storm
d. Typhoon
e. Super Typhoon

3. Public Warning Storm Signals

Activity 3: Plotting the PAR

Directions: I will be flashing a picture and determine the
coordinates of Philippine Area of Responsibility or PAR by completing
the table shown on the screen.

Points Latitude Longitude

a 5ᵒN 115ᵒE
b 15ᵒN 115ᵒE
c 21ᵒN 120ᵒE
d 25ᵒN 120ᵒE
e 25ᵒN 135ᵒE
f 5ᵒN 135ᵒE
E. Fixing Skills (Elaborate)

Activity 4: I Am Ready!
Directions: In a span of 5 minutes, prepare a survival kit or bag that is
ready for any kinds of disaster such as typhoon. When the time is up, students
will share what they have prepared.

F. Generalization

Guide Questions:
What is typhoon?
How typhoons develop?
What are the different tropical cyclone categories and the public
storm warning signals?
Why Philippines is typhoon prone country?
Why is it important to be aware and prepare in terms of calamity?

Values Integration: “We cannot stop natural disasters but we can arm
ourselves with knowledge: so many lives wouldn’t have to be lost if there was
enough disaster preparedness.” – Petra Nemcova

IV. Evaluation (Evaluate)

Multiple Choice. Directions: Read and answer the questions carefully. Choose the
letter of the correct answer.

1. What is the other term for tropical cyclone?

A. Earthquake
B. Tsunami
C. Typhoon
D. Wildfire

2. Where do typhoons form?

A. Lakes
B. Oceans
C. Rivers
D. Streams

3. Where do typhoons that hit the Philippines mostly originate?

A. Indian Ocean
B. Pacific Ocean
C. South China Sea
D. West Philippine Sea
4. Which agency takes charge of giving information about incoming
typhoon?
A. Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)
B. Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS)
C. National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council
(NDRRMC)
D. Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services
Administration (PAGASA)

5. What is the difference among cyclones, hurricanes, and typhoons?

A. Cyclones are bigger than hurricanes but smaller than typhoons.
B. Cyclones, hurricanes, and typhoons occur in different geographical
areas.
C. Hurricanes are stronger than cyclones but weaker than typhoons.
D. Typhoons are faster than cyclones but slower than hurricanes.

TRUE or FALSE. Directions: Read each statement carefully. Write TRUE if the
statement is correct and FALSE if the statement is wrong.

__________1. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services

Administration is the government agency that monitors weather disturbances.
__________2. The reason why the Philippines is prone to typhoons is because we are
located in the Pacific Ring of Fire.
__________3. Warm land helps typhoons sustain or increase their intensity.
__________4. When a typhoon reaches land, it will weaken due to the absence of
warm water.
__________5. We should NOT include electric wires in an emergency kit.

V. Agreement (Extend)

Create your own emergency response before, during and after the typhoon.
