WRITTEN REPORT

Introduction

The usage of assessment, as well as its types, methods, roles and terminologies are the main topics of this
paper. By using a variety of assessment methods to test, measure, and evaluate the required knowledge,
skills, and comprehension, it means that students should or can be able to meet the established
development standards and see how their learning progress that is improving continuously. In order to be
able to make quality assessments and determine whether there are any gaps in the learning process and
how far students may still attain their full potential, it emphasizes the kind of assessment that a teacher
should employ at the beginning, during, and at the end of the discussion. Different types of assessments
and methods can be also be applied by the teacher as a strategies or tools in making graded systems and
enhancing the minds of students.

Subject Matter
Teaching is not just a profession it is more than a vocation and this vocation entails love, compassion and
at the same time service specially towards our learner field and teaching is a key towards nation building
because without teaching the world would be nothing.
Assessment of learning it is a summative type of assessment used by the teacher to determine what the
students have learned in a unit or chapter against specified standards or goal and assessment of learning is
done at the end of every unit or chapter in order to certify the student's competence.
Examples of assessment of learning:
- Mastery test
- Periodical test
- Achievement test
Types of assessment
1.Diagnostic assessment- when you structure diagnostic assessments around your lesson, you'll get the
information you need to understand student knowledge and engage your whole classroom.
Some examples:
- Mind maps
- Flow chart
- Short quizzes
2.Formative assessment- help teacher to understand student learning while they teach and address their
teaching strategies accordingly and it can help you to track how student knowledge is growing and changing
in your classroom real-time. While it requires a bit of a time investment.
Some examples:
- Group project
- Class discussion
- Progress report
3. Summative assessment- measure student progress as an assessment of learning and provide data for
you, school leaders and district leaders. They're cost-efficient and valuable when it comes to communicating
students’ progress, but they don't always give clear feedback on the learning process and van foster a teach
to test mindset if you're not careful.
Some examples:
- Recording a podcast
- Writing a script for a short play
- Producing an independent study project
4.Ipsative assessment- When it was used with higher education distance learners, it helped motivate
students and encouraged them to act on feedback to improve their grades.
5.Norm referenced assessment- are test designed to compare an individual to a group of peers, usually based
on national standards and occasionally adjusted for age, ethnicity or other demographics.
Types of norm-reference assessments:
- IQ test
- Physical assessment
- Standardized college and admissions test like SAT and GRE
6. Criterion-referenced assessment- In the classroom, this means measuring student performance against
grade level standards and can include end of unit or final test to assess student understanding.
Some examples:
- Chapter test in a textbook
- Driver's license written exam
- Many certifications test
Role of assessment in classroom instruction
Instructional planning should come first for teachers. In the context of classroom instruction, assessments
serve four roles. The first assessment is the diagnostic assessment, which is administered before classes
begin. The formative assessment that takes place in the middle of the lesson or takes place as the second.
The last assessments that are provided at the end of instruction are the placement assessment and the
summative assessment.
1. Beginning of Instruction

Diagnostic Assessment is given at the beginning or during instruction. It is a crucial step in

teaching to identify students' strengths and weaknesses. It helps teachers understand prerequisite
knowledge about the subject, ensuring students have a solid foundation in the topic. For example,
if a student struggles with construct sentences, it's essential to diagnose their weaknesses.
Conversely, if a student finds complex lessons easy to understand, it's a sign of their prior
knowledge or strength. This assessment is similar to a doctor diagnosing a condition.

2. During Instruction

Formative Assessment used to monitor the learning progress during instruction. Formative
assessment is a method used by teachers to measure the students understanding and progress. It
involves asking questions during discussions, such as recitation, to determine if students can move
to the next topic or if the teacher needs to re-teach or provide more information. Means, you as the
teacher, you are forming, molding, and helping your students.

3. End of instruction

Summative Assessment given at the end of the course or unit. Summative assessment measures
changes before and after instruction, comparing before and after scenarios. It quantifies learning
experiences through quizzes, exams, and graded tests, assessing students' understanding and
progress in discussions.

Placement Assessment- placement tests, sometimes called placement exams, are tests that act as
indicators of a student's academic abilities. This assessment is not usually seen inside the classroom.
For example, to be able for students to reach the third-year level, they have to take the examination
for retention and that is what we called, placement assessment. In this assessment, we are checking
if the students can really survive the demands of a particular situation.

Assessment methods
Traditional assessment methods are the tests, quizzes, and written assignments that most of us are
pretty familiar with. This means that evaluating pupils, ranking them, and giving them their final
grade are the purposes of the traditional assessment. As a method of assessment, this includes the
use of tests, quizzes, and assignments. Multiple-choice tests, which are often used to students to
review or summarize the topics that they have learned, are one example of this.

Examples:

- Multiple Choices
- True or false
- Essays

Alternative assessment refers to non-traditional methods of evaluating students' learning. This

assessment involves students answer to a given question with ideas that naturally come to mind in
their own words. Thus, short answer questions, essays, and other types of assessment are examples.
The communication between the teacher and students is the main emphasize of this assessment.

- Essays
- Portfolios
- Journals

Authentic assessment focuses on students using and applying knowledge and skills in real-life
settings. It is also called the comprehensive or performance assessment. It provides long term
students engagement learning. So, authentic assessment should be scenario-based for example, the
students task activity is a role play scenario which is similar to realistic situation in life to be able
to help the students visualize themselves and to engage deeply in more productive learning.

Examples:

- Performance-based assessment
- Peer assessment

OTHER TERMINOLOGIES: MEASUREMENT EVALUATION

Assessment aims to improve the learning process through its strengths and weaknesses and it is
the process of collecting data based on performance, analyzing and interpreting of data to arrive at
a valid result.

Testing determines students' knowledge, skills, and experience of particular course material or
content through tests or examinations. They aim to quantify what learners know or understand.

Measurement is when the teacher is gathering information or data from the students. Whether the
students have learned something about the topic with the use of various methods and strategies. It's
all about measurement that involves numerical values used to present the performance grades of
the students. Example: Jessie got 13 correct answers out of 15 items in physical science test.
Evaluation will follow after the measurement. The teacher will make a decision or judgement
based on the score that the students will get. Example: Teacher's judgement in the role play
performance by the group of students.
Developmental activities

Group activity

How to play? There are two ducks that will represent the group 1 and group 2. Before the game
starts, the reporters will read the question and after that, the competition between the two ducks
will begin. The first duck that will reach the finish line will have the chance to answer the question
that the reporters have given. If the first duck (group 1), cannot answer the question, it can be
answered by the second duck (group 2). • Each group can pick who's going to be their representative
for each question. The gathered points of each group will be added as their plus points in their quiz.

Individual activity

Address the relationship between teaching and assessment of methods, and what does it suggest
about their impact on student learning outcomes?

Generalization
Teaching is more than just a job; it's a dedicated vocation that involves love, compassion, and service to
learners. It plays a crucial role in nation-building. To effectively measure students' learning, and assessment
of learning is to evaluating the result of completed project or course and a teacher is doing a final exam to
measure the students about the subject. Similarly, a chef might test a new recipe to ensure it meets quality
standards before serving it to customers. There are six types of assessment which are the diagnostic,
formative, summative, ipsative, norm-reference, criterion-reference assessment. These types of assessment
help the students to measure the performance against specific standards or objectives to determine
competence. For example, passing an entrance exam to qualify to TSU.
Since it allows students to determine and improve their learning progress, the topic of assessments in
classroom instruction and method assessment is fundamental in the field of teaching. Furthermore, method
assessment is a tool that teachers can apply to build students' deeper knowledge and skills over time. It also
helps teachers become more effective teachers by providing them with a helping hand they need. In previous
years, teachers were primarily focused on helping students learn more by developing their abilities and
knowledge. Students from previous school years have a solid foundation of knowledge that has contributed
in their success. Through the use of assessment in the classroom, teachers can become proficient about
appropriate assessments to use as well as assessment methods, which include traditional, alternative, and
authentic assessments. These tools can assist teachers in creating engaging and productive activities for
both inside and outside of the classroom. Other terminologies assessment, measurement, evaluation, testing.
These processes collectively ensure that performance and progress are accurately assessed and improved.
