Verb patterns

Infinitive and gerunds

Take: bare / zero infinitive. example: I should take this class earlier.
To take: full infinitive example; I want to take some rest.
Taking: gerund example; I am tired of taking bath at night

o Infinitive

Usage

1. To indicate the purpose of an action

Example:

a. He bought some flowers to give (this is the purpose) to his wife.


b. I will lock the door to prevent theft.
c. I will go to the park to see the sky.
d. I study English to travel to the UK.

2. As subject of the sentence

Example:

a. To wait seemed foolish when decisive action was required.


b. To swim in that sea may be dangerous.
c. To have breakfast is a good habit.
d. To walk is the best way to start working out.

3. As direct object of the sentence

Example:

a. I like to write in English.


b. Everyone wanted to go.
c. My dog ate my homework.
d. They will win the race tomorrow.

4. As subject complement
Example:

a. His ambition is to fly.


b. What is essential to maintain a healthy diet.

5. After an adjective, full infinitive

Example:

a. Its wonderful to have money.


b. Its wonderful to be rich.
c. Its wrong to hurt animals.
d. Its cool to have a cat.

6. Full infinitive after to rearing to a person.

Example:

a. Can I ask you to help me with something?


b. I invited a friend to attend the ceremony.
c. I will invite all my friends to eat at a restaurant.
d. I want maria to attend my date.

7. Used with question word, after a question word use the infinitive
(how, what, where, which, when, who, why)

Example:

a. Do you understand what to do?


b. Tell me when to press.
c. That teacher is the one who is going to explain the class today.

8. After modal auxiliary verbs (will, shall, would, could…)

a. My sister could play the piano when she was five


b. You must get up earlier in the morning

Some verbs that use full infinitive only: need, want, plan, intend,
promise, refuse.
I need to go.
She wants to work.
He plans to enter class.
She intended to be at home.
He promised to love her.
You refuse to wake up.

o The gerund form of the verbs

Usage

1. As subject of a sentence

Example:

a. Writing in English is difficult.


b. Watching tv is my favorite pastime.

2. As direct object of a sentence

Example:

a. I like writing in English.


b. I love going out to restaurants.

3. As a subject complement.

Example:

a. My cat favorite activity is sleeping.


b. One of his duties is doing homework.
4. As objet
