Aim
• To study the phenomenon of Mutual Induction
Working:
If two coils of wire are brought into close
proximity with each other so that the magnetic
field from one links with the other, a voltage will
be generated in the second coil as a result. This is
called mutual inductance: when voltage
impressed upon one coil induces a voltage in
another.
Mutual Induction:
The phenomenon according to which an
opposing emf is produced in a coil (i.e.primary
coil) as a result of change in current or magnetic
flux linked with a neighboring coil(i.e. Secondary
coil) is called mutual induction
Coefficient of Mutual Induction:
Mutual Induction of two long
coaxial solenoids:
The Factors Affecting Mutual
Inductance
•The number of turns in coils A and B:
The more the number of turns, the higher the mutual
inductance between the two coils.

•The size and shape of both the coils:

The mutual inductance will differ based on coils of
distinct shapes and sizes.

•The distance between the two coils:

The mutual inductance will be less if the distance
between the two coils is more. If the distance between the two
coils is less, the mutual inductance will be more.
Application of Mutual Induction
Electrical Generator:
The EMF generated by Faraday’s law of
induction due to relative movement of a circuit and a
magnetic field is the phenomenon underlying
electrical generators. When a permanent magnet is
moved relative to a conductor, or vice versa, an
electromotive force is created. If the wire is
connected through an electrical load, current will
flow, and thus electrical energy is generated,
converting the mechanical energy of motion to
electrical energy.
Electrical transformer:
The EMF predicted by
Faraday’s law is also responsible for
electrical transformers. When the
electric current in a loop of wire
changes, the changing current
creates a changing magnetic field. A
second wire in reach of this magnetic
field will experience this change in
magnetic field as a change in its
coupled magnetic flux, dΦB/dt.
Therefore, an electromotive force is
set up in the second loop called the
induced EMF or transformer EMF. If
the two ends of this loop are
connected through an electrical load,
current will flow.
Application of Mutual Induction in
Real Life
The principles of electromagnetic induction are
applied in many devices and systems, including:
•Electrical generators
•Induction motors
•Induction sealing
•Inductive charging
•Transformers
•Wireless energy transfer
•Wireless charger
Conclusion
• This introduction to mutual inductance gives us
an understanding of what it is and how it is used
around us.
• Mutual induction is simply the generation of an
induced EMF in a coil as a result of current
flowing in an adjacent coil. The measure of the
EMF induced between these two coils is mutual
inductance.
