Assignment - 2
[Max. Marks 20(= 𝟓 × 𝟒)]
—---------------------------------------------------------------
All symbols carry their standard meaning. Due date: April 08, 2024
—--------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Consider a system of two magnetic needles of moments 𝑚 and 𝑚 , respectively. One

of them, say, 𝑚 is kept at origin, i.e., (0,0) with its moment aligned in the X-axis. Other
one is placed at the (1,1) position and is free to rotate in the XY-plane. Calculate the
angle 𝜃 between these magnetic moments in equilibrium condition.

2. A cable consists of a solid inner cylinder concentric with an outer shell. The inner cylinder
has radius 𝑎, while the outer shell has radii 𝑏 (inner wall) and 𝑐 (outer wall). A uniform
current 𝐼 flows through inner and outer conductors, along opposite directions to the
common axis. Find the magnetic field over all space.

3. A long cylindrical conductor of radius R carries a current I as shown in Figure. The current
density J, however, is not uniform over the cross section of the conductor but is a function of
the radius according to J = br, where b is a constant. Find an expression for the magnetic
field B ; (a)- at a distance r1 < R and (b)- at a distance r2 > R, measured from the axis.

4. A toroid having an iron core with permeability 𝜇. It is wound with 𝑁 closely spaced turns
of wire carrying a current 𝐼. Find the magnitude of the magnetization 𝑀 at any arbitrary
location inside the iron.

5. A thin isolated wire forms a plane spiral consisting of a large number N of closely packed
turns through which a steady state current I is flowing. The radii of the internal and external
loops are 𝑎 and 𝑏 respectively. Find the magnetic field at the center of the spiral and the
magnetic moment of the spiral.
