3.5 The American Revolution
 First Continental Congress (1774):
o Delegates from 12 colonies convened in Philadelphia to address
colonial grievances.
o Adopted the Suffolk Resolves, urging colonies to resist the
Intolerable Acts by making military preparations and boycotting
British goods.
o Established the Continental Association to enforce economic
sanctions against Britain.
 Lexington and Concord (April 1775):
o First military engagements of the Revolutionary War.
o British troops aimed to seize colonial military supplies in
Concord.
o Colonial militias confronted British forces, leading to casualties
on both sides.
 Second Continental Congress (May 1775):
o Delegates met in Philadelphia to manage the colonial war effort.
o Appointed George Washington as commander-in-chief of the
Continental Army.
o Issued the Olive Branch Petition, seeking reconciliation with
Britain, which was rejected by King George III.
 Declaration of Independence (July 4, 1776):
o Drafted primarily by Thomas Jefferson.
o Outlined colonial grievances and asserted the colonies' right to
self-governance.
o Emphasized Enlightenment ideals, including natural rights and
the social contract.
 Key Battles:
o Battle of Saratoga (1777): Turning point; American victory

Cornwallis surrendered to American and French forces.

o Formally ended the Revolutionary War.

3.6 The Influence of Revolutionary Ideals
 Republican Motherhood:
o Emphasized the role of women in educating virtuous citizens.

upbringing of informed children.
 Abolition Movements:
o Northern states began gradual emancipation of enslaved
individuals.
o The Pennsylvania Abolition Society was founded in 1775.

Northwest Territory.
 Native American Relations:

war.
o Post-war treaties often resulted in loss of land and autonomy for
Native Americans.
 International Impact:

including the French Revolution and various independence
movements in Latin America.
