Definition

Expository, or in Indonesian known as exposition text is a type of writing that aims to

explain, describe, or provide information about a topic based on existing facts. This
text is often used to convince the audience or reader of a certain opinion or issue.

Characteristics

Expository Text: Expository text is writing that presents knowledge or information in

a clear and structured way. It is usually non-fiction and contains arguments supported
by evidence and facts. In an educational context, expository texts are often taught in
schools as part of the English curriculum.

Characteristics of Expository Text

Factual: Based on accurate information and data.

Clear structure: It has a structure that consists of a thesis, argument, and conclusion.

Formal Language: Using standardized language and in accordance with correct

grammar.

Expository texts are divided into two main types:

1. Analytical Exposition: This type begins with a statement of the author's stance on
an issue, followed by arguments in favor of the opinion. Usually, the text ends with a
repetition or reaffirmation of the original opinion.

2. Hortatory Exposition: This text starts with a statement about a current issue,
followed by arguments and suggestions for specific actions. The aim is to encourage
the reader to do something about the problem.

There is no single, universally accepted "formula" for expository writing. The

structure and approach depend on the specific topic and the method chosen
(definition, comparison/contrast, cause-and-effect, etc.). However, a general
framework can be applied:

1. Introduction
- Opening Sentence: Start with an interesting sentence or question to grab the reader's
attention.

- Background: Briefly introduce the topic and provide necessary context.

- Thesis Statement: Clearly state the main point or purpose of the writing. This is the
main idea that you will develop throughout the writing.

2. Paragraph Content

- Topic Sentence: Each paragraph should begin with a sentence that introduces the
main idea of the paragraph. This idea should support the thesis statement.

- Supporting Evidence: Provide facts, statistics, examples, or other evidence to

support the topic sentence. Use credible sources.

- Explanation/Analysis: Explain how the evidence supports the topic sentence and
thesis statement as a whole.

Conclusion

- Repeat the thesis (in different words): Summarize the main points briefly, but avoid
repeating the introduction.

- Summarize Key Points: Briefly summarize the main supporting points.

- Closing: Offer final thoughts, reflections, or implications of the topic.

Purpose of Expository Text

Explaining Information: An exposition text aims to provide an in-depth explanation

of an issue or topic.

Convince the Reader: The writer tries to convince the reader to accept a certain view
or opinion regarding the issue discussed.

Encourages Discussion: Since they often contain the author's opinion, exposition
texts can spark pros and cons among readers.
