1. Question (a):
- (i) mark the following : Afghanistan, India, Line of Longitude 70°E.
- Country A: Afghanistan
- Country B: India

- (ii) On Fig. 1, use a pencil to draw the Tropic of Cancer.

- (iii) Describe Pakistan's location in relation to other countries in South and Central Asia.
- Pakistan is located in South Asia, bordered by India to the east, Afghanistan and Iran to the
west, and China to the north. To the south, it has a coastline along the Arabian Sea.

1. Question (b):
- (i) Describe the main features of the desert areas shown in the photograph.
- The desert areas are characterized by sparse vegetation, sandy soil, and undulating sand
dunes. The climate is arid with extreme temperatures.

- (ii) Explain the challenges of living in desert areas, such as those shown in Fig. 1.2.
- Challenges include scarcity of water, extreme temperatures, limited vegetation, and
difficulties in agriculture and transportation.

- (iii) Study Fig. 1.3 (insert). Describe two features of the climate of the areas shown.
- High temperatures during the day and low temperatures at night.
- Low and unpredictable rainfall.

- (iv) Suggest three ways in which rainfall affects the climate of Pakistan.
- Influences agricultural productivity and crop patterns.
- Affects water availability for both domestic and industrial use.
- Determines the occurrence of floods and droughts.

Suggest two ways in which latitude affects the climate of Pakistan.

-Two Ways in Which Latitude Affects the Climate of Pakistan:
1. Variation in Temperature:
- Northern Regions:Pakistan's northern areas, which are closer to the Tropic of Cancer and
higher latitudes, experience cooler temperatures, particularly in the mountainous regions like the
Karakoram, Himalayas, and Hindu Kush ranges. These areas have a cold climate with
snow-covered peaks and glaciers.
- Southern Regions:In contrast, the southern regions of Pakistan, closer to the equator, such
as Sindh and Balochistan, experience much higher temperatures. The latitude here results in a
hot, arid climate, with extremely high temperatures during the summer months.

2. Influence on Monsoon Patterns:

- Southern and Coastal Areas:The latitude of southern Pakistan, being closer to the equator,
influences the onset and intensity of the summer monsoon. These areas receive more rainfall
during the monsoon season due to their proximity to the Arabian Sea, which brings moist air
and heavy rains.
- Northern and Inland Areas: The northern and inland regions, being at higher latitudes,
receive less monsoon rainfall compared to the southern coastal areas. The monsoon winds lose
much of their moisture as they move inland and northward, resulting in a drier climate in these
areas.

1. Question (b):
- (i) On the map name the following: River Indus, Karachi, Arabian Sea, River Gomal.
- These locations need to be marked and labeled on the map.

- (ii) Describe the natural topography of area D on the map.

- Area B includes regions with varied topography such as mountains, valleys, and plains. The
northern areas have high mountain ranges, while the southern regions consist of flat plains and
deserts.

1. Question (d):
- Evaluate the extent to which the natural topography of Pakistan limits human activity and
economic development in the north of the country.
- The mountainous terrain in the north limits large-scale agriculture and infrastructure
development. Harsh climatic conditions and difficulty in transportation also hinder economic
activities. However, these regions are rich in natural resources and have potential for tourism
and hydroelectric power generation. Different perspectives should be considered, including
economic, environmental, and social factors.

Question (i)
- Name the desert X and Y on the map.

For this question, we need to identify the two desert regions marked as X and Y on the map
provided in the image.
Desert X:This is likely the Thar Desert, located in the southeastern part of Pakistan and
extending into India.

Desert Y: This could be the Kharan Desert, located in the southwestern part of Pakistan in the
Balochistan region.

Page(6)
- Describe the scene in Photograph A.

To describe the scene in Photograph A, analyze the visible features such as landforms,
vegetation, climate indicators, and human activity. Since the photograph is not clearly visible, a
general description could include:

General Description:
The photograph likely shows a typical desert landscape, which might include:
- Expansive sandy plains with little to no vegetation.
- Possibly some sand dunes or rocky outcrops.
- Sparse or no human habitation or infrastructure.
- A harsh, arid environment indicated by the barren land and clear skies.
