2. Answer All questions from section A and choose two questions from section B.
3. All working and answers for each question must be shown clearly.

SECTION A (Answer all questions)
1. (a) (i) Draw a tree diagram for tossing a fair coin twice then show that
the probability of getting a head when a fair coin is tossed twice is a
discrete random variable.
(ii) If X~𝑃o (𝜆) and E(x2) = 6. Find λ and 𝑝(𝑥 = 2)
(b) The probability of solving the problem independently by A and B

(b) If P stands for ‘8 is even’ and q stands for ‘4 is a factor of 5’ and r stands for
‘3 is a prime number’. Write the truth value of the following statements;
(i) If 8 is even, then 4 is not a factor of 5.
(ii) Either 3 is not prime or 4 is a factor of 5.
(c) Use the truth table to determine the validity of

(d) Describe the following argument in symbolic form and test the validity of
the statement using truth table; “If he begs pardon then he will remain in
school. Either he is punished or he does not remain in school. He will not
be punished therefore , he did not beg pardon.

3. (a) (i) Prove that (𝑎 × 𝑏)2 + (𝑎 ⋅ 𝑏)2 = (|𝑎||𝑏|)2


(ii) Show that the area of a triangle with position vectors a and b

is given by the formula; 4A2 = |𝒂|𝟐 |𝒃|𝟐 – (𝒂. 𝒃)𝟐 .


(b) If a vector makes an angle 𝛼, 𝛽, 𝛾 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ 𝑂𝑋, 𝑂𝑌 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑂𝑍 𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑝𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑙𝑦,
Prove that 𝑠𝑖𝑛2 𝛼 + 𝑠𝑖𝑛2 𝛽 + 𝑠𝑖𝑛2 𝛾 = 2

(c) (i) Two points A and B have position vectors a = 3i − 2 j + 3k


b = 4i + 3 j − 4k respectively. Find the position vector of a point
that divides AB internally in the ratio 1 : 4 .
(ii) If the velocity of a body at time t is given by 𝑉 = 3𝑡 2 𝑖 − 2𝑡𝑗 + 4𝑘
find the expression for the acceleration a and displacement s of the
body at time t given that 𝑡 = 1, 𝑠 = 3𝑖 − 𝑗 + 2𝑘.

4. (a) If z + 1 = z + 2(1 + i ) then find z.

to the amount of the radioactive substance present. Write the differential
equation. Hence, for radium the half-life is about 1600 years.

(iii) Find the percentage of a given sample of radium which would
still exist after a lapse of 200 years in storage.

8. (a) A satellite dish receiver is in a shape of a parabola. A cross section of the


dish shows diameter of 13 feet at a distance of 13 feet at a distance 2.5
feet from the vertex of the parabola.
(i) Write an equation for the parabola
(ii) Where should the receiver be placed?

Show that the equation y = 5x − 2 x represents a parabola and hence find

(c) Find the equation of the ellipse if the centre is at (0,0) major axis is on y-axis
and passing through the points (3,2) and (1,6).

(ii) Sketch the graph whose polar equation is given by 𝑟 = 1 +2cos𝜃
