Question 1
Sports is important to the development in the region, particularly human development.
I agree to a great extent that sports play a major role in regional development as it provides employment opportunities, there are health benefits and it is important in Caribbean identity. To begin, sports provide numerous occupations which can aid in economic development in the Caribbean. For instance, some employment opportunities available in sports management are coaches, instructors, nutritionist, medical personnel and other support staff. Recently, more specialized occupations are arising in sports such as sports psychology and sports medicine which provides more opportunities for citizens. Additionally, occupations are also provided for persons involved in construction as facilities such as stadiums, for these sports are to be constructed. Consequently, this helps economic development in the Caribbean. For instance, there is one cricket team which indicates the regional support affiliated with cricket. However, compared to Europe and North America, development in the Caribbean has a long way to go still as it can earn more income from other sports. Secondly, many health benefits arise from participation in sports. Some health benefits for participation in physical activity include lower risks of obesity, stroke, heart disease and strengthening the bones, muscles and cardiovascular system. In addition to physical activity, healthy diets and lifestyle contribute to good health and well-being. Also physical well-being is beneficial to the mental state of individuals. For instance, research done shows that persons involved in physical activity are acquire lower rates and stress and anxiety. Additionally, persons develop discipline and the ability to work in teams and cooperate when participating in sports. It is evident that sports play an integral role in contributing the pillars of the Human Development Paradigm. Thirdly, sports contributes to the empowering of the Caribbean people in society as they are able to feel a sense of Caribbean identity. The Caribbean can be recognized as a sporting presence in the world even though it is only a national team that achieves the honours. For example, the success of the West Indies Cricket team aids in constructing Caribbean identity as players are chosen from all Caribbean islands. Also, the incorporation of sports into the school curriculum is to promote unity among students. In conclusion, employment opportunities, health benefits and Caribbean identity contributes to the Human Development Paradigm which indicates that sports plays a major role in regional development.
