STT FOR ST1 (Total: 25 marks)

Note: Answer all the sections.

SECTION A
Attempt all questions. (3X2=6marks)
1. What were the assumptions of Planck’s quantum theory? Also mention Planck’s radiation law.
2. Calculate de-Broglie’s wavelength for an electron which is accelerated through a potential difference of 121
volts.
3. What were the limitations/failures of classical mechanics? Give any two examples.

SECTION B
Attempt all questions. (3X4=12 marks)
4. What are the conditions which must be fulfilled by wave function? Derive time independent Schrödinger’s
wave equation.
5. Derive an expression for de-Broglie wavelength. Define phase velocity and group velocity. Prove that =

 −

6. A particle is moving freely in an infinite potential box of width ‘a’. Find the energy eigen values and
normalized wave functions for this particle. Calculate the energy difference between first excited state and
ground state when an electron is trapped in an infinite potential box of width 1Å.

SECTION C (1X7=7 mark)

7. Prove that Compton’s shift is independent of wavelength of incident light and it depends upon angle of
scattering. Why Compton’s shift is not observable with visible light? X rays of wavelength 1Å are scattered
from a block of carbon. The scattered radiation is viewed at 90° to the incident beam. Find Compton’s shift and
kinetic energy of recoiled electron.

STT FOR ST2 (Total=50 marks)

Note: Answer all the sections.
SECTION A
Attempt all questions. (5X2=10marks)
8. What is displacement current? Explain the difference between conduction current and displacement current.
9. Using fourth Maxwell’s equation derive equation of continuity.
10. What are coherent sources? Why two independent even similar sources can’t be coherent in nature?
11. Define dispersive power of a diffraction grating and derive an expression for this.
12. What do you mean diffraction of light. Explain Fresnel’s and Fraunhofer’s diffraction.

SECTION B
Attempt all questions. (5X5=25 marks)
13. What is Poynting vector? Derive an expression for Poynting theorem and explain its physical significance.
If earth receives 2.8 cal min-1 cm-2 solar energy. Find the amplitudes of electric and magnetic fields of radiation.
14. Define skin depth. Derive an expression for skin depth in conductive medium. Find the skin depth δ at a
frequency of 3.5 MHz in Aluminium, where σ = 35 X 106 S/m and μr =1.
15. Find an expression for path difference in wedge shaped films (thin films of non-uniform thickness) in
reflected system. Also find conditions of constructive and destructive interference.Light of wavelength 5893Å
falls normally on a wedge shaped film of refractive index 1.5 forming fringes that are 0.2cm apart. What is
angle of wedge in seconds.
16. Explain Rayleigh’s criteria of resolution. Derive an expression for resolving power of a grating.A plane
transmission grating has 16,000 lines to an inch over a length of 5 inches. Find in wavelength region of 6000Å,
in the second order, the smallest wavelength difference that can be resolved.
17. In a diffraction grating derive an expression for i) absent spectra ii) maximum possible order. A diffraction
grating is just able to resolve two lines of wavelengths 5140.34 Å and 5140.85 Å in the first order. Will it
resolve the lines 8037.20 Å and 8037.50 Å in the second order?

SECTION C
Attempt all questions. (2X7.5=15marks)
18. Derive plane electromagnetic wave equations in free space/vacuum. Prove that velocity of electromagnetic
wave in free space is equal to 1 0 0 . Prove that electromagnetic waves are transverse in nature.
19. Discuss the phenomena of Fraunhofer’s diffraction due to a single slit. Derive an expression for intensity
distribution due to single slit and deduce the position of maxima and minima. Show that relative intensities of
successive maxima are nearly 1:4/9π 2 : 4/25π2 :4/49π2 .
