Q.1- Calculate the voltage induced in the armature winding of a 4-pole, lap wound dc machine
having 728 active conductors and running at 1800rpm. The flux per pole 30mwb. If the armature
is designed to carry a maximum line current of 100A. What is the maximum electromagnetic
power developed by the armature? ANS- 655.2V , 65.52Kw.
Q.2- A 20kw, 200v shunt generator has an armature resistance of 0.05Ω and a shunt field
resistance of 200Ω. Calculate the power developed in the armature when it delivers rated output.
ANS- 20.7kW
Q.3- An 8-pole dc shunt generator has 778 wave connected armature conductors running at
500rpm, supplies a load of 12.5Ω resistance at a terminal voltage of 250 v . The armature
resistance is 0.24Ω and the field resistance is 250Ω. Find out the armature current, the induced
emf and the flux per pole. ANS- 9.834mWb
Q.4- A 4-pole dc generator with lap –connected armature has field and armature resistances of
80Ω and 0.1Ω respectively. It supplies power to 50 lamps rated for 100volts, 60wattss each.
Calculate the total armature current and generated emf by allowing a brush contact drop of 1 volt
per brush. ANS- 31.25A , 105.125V
Q.5- A 140 v dc shunt motor has an armature resistance of 0.2Ω and field resistance 70Ω. The
full load line current is 40A and the full load speed is 1800rpm. If the brush contact drop is 3v,
find the speed of the motor at half load. ANS- 1856rpm.
Q.6- A dc shunt motor runs at 600 rpm taking 60A from a 230 v supply. Armature resistance is
0.2Ω and field resistance is 115Ω. Find the speed when the current through the armature is 30A.

Q.7- A25 hp, 250v dc series motor has armature resistance of 0.1Ω and field resistance of 0.05Ω
and brush contact drop 3v. When the line current is 80A, the speed is 600rpm. Find the speed
when the line current is 100A. ANS- 473.9rpm.
Q.8- A250V dc shunt motor having an armature resistance of 0.25Ω carries an armature current
of 50A and runs at 750rpm. If the flux is reduced by 10%, find the speed. Assume that the torque
remains the same. 828.5rpm
Q.9- A dc shunt generator develops 50kw at 250v when running at 500rpm. The armature and
field resistances are 0.05Ω and 125Ω respectively. Calculate the speed of the same machine and
developed torque when running as a shunt motor and taking 50kw at 250V . Allow 1 volt per
brush for contact drop. ANS- 445 RPM , 991.6Nm
Q.10- A 200 v dc series motor runs at 500rpm when taking a current of 25 A. The resistance of
the armature is 0.5Ω and that of field is 0.3Ω. If the current remains constant, calculate the
resistance necessary to reduce the speed to 250rpm. ANS- 3.6Ω
