PAPER-I Chapter: Chemical Kinetics MM:25 Time:1.30 Hr.

1. Which of the following statements is not correct for the catalyst? (a) It catalyses the
backward and forward reaction to the same extent. (b) It alters ΔG of the reaction. (c)It is a
substance that does not change the equilibrium constant of a reaction. (d)It provides an alternate
mechanism by reducing activation energy between reactants and products. (1M)

2. Rate law for the reaction, A + 2B →C is found to be Rate = k[A][B]. Concentration of

reactant ‘B’ is doubled, keeping the concentration of ‘A’ constant, the value of rate constant
will be

(a)the same (b)doubled (c) quadrupled (d) halved (1M)

3. A statement of assertion (A) is given followed by a corresponding statement of reason (R)

just below it. Of the statements mark the correct answer as: (i)Assertion and reason both are
correct statements and reason is correct explanation for assertion. (ii)Assertion and reason both
are correct statements but reason is not correct explanation for assertion. (iii)Assertion is a
correct statement but reason is wrong. (iv)Assertion and reason both are incorrect statements.
(v)Assertion is wrong statement but reason is correct statement

Assertion: The order of a reaction can have fractional value.

Reason: The order of reaction cannot be written from the balanced chemical equation. (1M)

4. For the reaction: 2N2O5 (g) → 4NO2 (g) + O2(g) . The rate of formation of NO2 (g) is 2.8
x 10-3 M s-1. Calculate the rate of disappearance of N2O5 (g). (2M)

5. For a first order reaction, show that time required for 99% completion is twice the time
required for the completion of 90% of reaction. (2M)

6. The rate constant for a reaction of zero order in A is 0.0030 mol L -1 s-1. How long will it take
for the initial concentration of A to fall from 0.10 M to 0.075 M. (2M)

7. NO(g) + Cl2 (g) →2NOCl (g) The following data were collected . All the measurements
were taken at 263 K:
Write the expression for the (a) Rate law.

(b) Calculate the value of rate constant and specify in units.

(c) What is the initial rate of disappearance of Cl2 in exp.4 ? (3M)

8.The rate constant for the first order decomposition of H22O2 is given by the following
equation: Log k = 14.2 - 1.0 x 104 K T Calculate Ea for this reaction and rate constant k if its
half-life period be 200 minutes. (Given: R = 8.314 JK-1mol-1) (3M)

9.For a reaction A → C a graph is given below predict (5M)

(i)The order of the reaction in this case.

(ii)What does the slope of the graph represent?
(iii)What are the units of rate constant k?
(iv)Give the relationship between k and t1/2 (half-life period).
(v) Draw the plot of log [R]o/[R] vs. time (s)

10. Explain the Collision Theory of Chemical Reaction. The activation energy for the reaction
2 HI(g) → H2 + I2 (g) is 209.5 kJ mol–1 at 581K.Calculate the fraction of molecules of reactants
having energy equal to or greater than activation energy? (5M)
