9–1 Glutamic acid (C5H9O4N) is used as one of the reagents for

a standard to check the BOD test. Determine the theoretical
oxygen demand of 150 mg · L−1 of glutamic acid. Assume the
following reactions apply.

C5H9O4N + 4.5O2 −→ 5CO2 + 3H2O + NH3

NH3 + 2O2 −→ NO−3 + H+ + H2O

Solution:

Glutamic acid = 147 mg/L

Molecular weight of oxygen demand (4.502+2.020)
= 208mg/L

(150-208)/147 = 212.24 mg/L

Answer: 212.24 mg/L

9–2 Bacterial cells have been represented by the chemical

formula C5H7NO2. Compute the theoretical oxygen demand (in
grams O2 · mol−1 of cells), assuming the following reactions
apply.

C5H7NO2 + 5O2 −→ 5CO2 + 2H2O + NH3

NH3 + 2O2 −→ NO−3 + H+ + H2O

Solution:

Mass = molar mass x no. of moles

Mass of oxygen required = 32g/mol x 7 = 224 g/mol

Answer: 224 g/mol

9–3 The company you work for plans to release a waste stream
containing 7.0 mg · L−1 of benzaldehyde.

Assuming that benzaldehyde degrades according the reaction:

C7H6O + 8O2 −→ 7CO2 + 3H2O

calculate the theoretical carbonaceous oxygen demand of this

waste stream (in mg · L−1).

Solution:

7mg/l (256gm/106gm) = 16.906mg/L

Answer: 16.906mg/L

9–4 The company you work for plans to release a waste stream
containing 10 mg · L−1 of phenol. Assuming that phenol
degrades according the reaction:

C6H7O + 7.25O2 −→ 6CO2 + 3.5H2O

Calculate the theoretical carbonaceous oxygen demand of this

waste stream.

Solution:

Mol. Weight of phenol = 95g

7.25 02 = 7.25x16x2 = 232g
theoretical carbonaceous oxygen demand:
(232/95) x 10 = 24.421mg/L

Answer: 24.421 mg/L

9–5 If the BOD5 of a waste is 220.0 mg · L−1 and the ultimate
BOD is 320.0 mg · L−1, what is the rate constant?

Solution:
BOD5 = 220mg/L
BOD = 320 mg/L
T= 200C
220=320(1-e-k(5)), k=0.233/day
Answer: 0.233/day

9–6 If the BOD of a municipal wastewater at the end of 7 days is

60.0 mg · L−1 and the ultimate BOD is 85.0 mg · L−1, what is
the rate constant?
Solution:
BOD7 = 60mg/L
Lo=85 mg/L
t= 7 days
BOD7=Lo(1-e-kt)
k= Ln[(-60+85)/85]/7 => k=0.1748/day
Answer: 0.1748 /day

9–7 The BOD rate constant is 0.233 day−1 for a municipal

wastewater. The BOD5 was measured to be 250 mg · L−1. What
is the ultimate BOD?
Solution:
272=Lo(1-e-0.233x5)
250/0.688=363.372mg/L
Answer: 363.372 mg/L
9–8 The BOD rate constant is 0.433 day−1 for a municipal
wastewater. The BOD5 was measured to be

272 mg · L−1. What is the ultimate BOD?

Solution:
272=Lo(1-e-0.433x5)
272/1-0.114 = 306.997 mg/L
Answer: 306.997mg/L

9–9 Assuming that the data in Problem 9–5 were taken at 20◦C,
compute the rate constant at a temperature of 15◦C.
Solution:
K15= 0.233 x 1.135 = 0.1235/ day
Answer: 0.1235/day

9–10 Assuming that the data in Problem 9–6 were taken at 25◦C,
compute the rate constant at 16◦C.
Solution:
K16 = (0.133/day)(1.135)(16-20)
K16 = 0.0801/day
Answer: 0.0801/day
