Answer all questions
1. Assuming that a particle is characterized by a standing de Broglie wave, come up with an
equation for the allowed energies of a particle in a one-dimensional box.
(5mks)

2. Describe the degeneracies of a two-dimensional box whose two sides have

different lengths (4 mks)
3. In a single graph with proper axes labels, draw the Radial Function for 1s,2s,2p and in
another graph draw for 3s, 3p, 3d orbitals for a Hydrogen atom indicating nodes and
relative position of the maxima. Repeat the same exercise for the Radial Distribution
Function. Qualitatively explain what happens in case of the other hydrogenic atoms such
as Li+2? (4mks)
4. Assuming hypothetical NaCl2 would crystalize in the fluorite structure, Calculate
enthalpy of formation of NaCl2. Comment on the calculated value of ΔfH. Given that
enthalpy of sublimation of Na = +109 KJmol-1 , Enthalpy of atomization of Cl =
+121.7 KJmol-1 ,1st ionization energy of Na = +494.0 KJmol-1 , 2nd ionization energy
of Na = +4561 KJmol-1 , Electron affinity of Cl= -355 KJmol-1, lattice energy = -2155
KJmol-1 And give reasons why NaCl2 does not exist (8mks)
5. On the basis of intermolecular attractions, explain the differences in the boiling points
of n–butane (−1 °C) and chloroethane (12 °C), which have similar molar masses. (2mks)
6. Arrange the following species in the order of increasing covalency and ionic character,
NaF, NaCl, NaBr and NaI with justifications (4mks)
7. Consider a particle in a cubic box. What is the degeneracy of the level that has an
energy 14/3 times that of the lowest energy level (3mks)
8 Explain why the electrons determine the characteristics of any given chemical species yet
they have infinitesimal mass (3mks)
9 Describe how electrophilicity index is related to HOMO (Highest Occupied Molecular
Orbital) and LUMO (Lowest Occupied Molecular Orbital), the eventual impact on reactivity of
the chemical species (4mks)
