My name is Kim Khoa, and I’m excited to guide you through this journey of
mastering the art of public speaking.
2 I’d like to start by giving you an overview of the course. This course is designed
to equip you with the essential skills needed to confidently deliver an effective
speech to an audience.
In this course, you are guided on how to develop specific topics, prepare content,
and practice your presentations. Moreover, you can also enhance your virtual
presentation skills.
1. Confidence: Regular practice will help reduce anxiety and boost your self-
esteem, making you more confident in expressing your ideas to others in
both informal and formal occasions.
2. Communication: It improves your ability to deliver thoughts clearly and
effectively, which is essential in both personal and professional contexts.
3. Critical Thinking: Preparing for presentations enables you to think
critically, organize your ideas logically, and develop problem-solving
skills better.
4. Resilience: You will overcome your fear, tackle your challenges, and
avoid common mistakes in public speaking.
5. Empathy & Understanding: To engage with diverse audiences, you will
learn to consider different perspectives and respond appropriately to
audiences.
6. Leadership: In both individual and group presentations, you will learn to
demonstrate leadership qualities by collaborating, influencing, inspiring,
etc.
After completing the course, you will be able to apply the knowledge and skills of
public speaking to deliver individual or group presentations.
Last but not least, you can enhance positive and proactive thinking in learning.
6 This course consists of a mix of lectures, individual tasks and group work. Each
week, we will study one unit, covering different aspects of public speaking,
ending with a final presentation where you will showcase your growth.
UNIT 7: Revision
7 According to Dale & Wolf (2013), preparing a speech is like preparing a meal.
You will follow a recipe or use step-by-step instructions to put something
together after you take it out of the box. It must have a menu, including
appetizers, main course, and dessert. Similarly, preparing a great speech must
have a recipe. Hopefully, at the end of this course, you can create your own recipe
for a public speech from start to finish.
8 Now, let’s move on to another important part of the course. It is Testing and
Assessment. As you can see in this table, it covers different types of on-going
assessment such as Discussion Forum, Video Conferences, Tests. Moreover, there
is one final speaking test in which you are required to give a live virtual
presentation to examiners. Further information will be provided in Unit 7.
9 Here are some pieces of advice for your learning strategies in this course.
1. Watch the lesson videos and pay attention to the main ideas.
7. Collect ideas during the course to prepare for your final test
10 In addition, I’d like to give you some more tips for continuous improvement.
We often listen to others, but actually we should have some time for
listening to ourselves. For example, your voice sounds monotonous, giving
no impact on listeners. You will fail to make people understand you if you
don’t understand you thoroughly.
Even poor speakers can give you some lessons to learn, and mistakes to
avoid.
It is said that we should listen and read more in order to speak better.
11 Are You afraid of speaking in front of many people? Is this the first time you
must give a public speech? Instead of fighting your fear, you can work with it! If
you decide to put it off because of worrying about your imperfections, you will
get stuck there forever. Fred Miller, a coach in public speaking, said: “The worst
speech you’ll ever give will be far better than the one you never give!”. He also
said: “Trying something new often takes us out of our comfort zone. That’s why
we feel uncomfortable! It’s worth the effort because when we succeed, our
comfort zone is larger.”. It is true, isn’t it?
12 Get out of your comfort zone. Take action. Let your learning start. Make your
speech powerful.
The power of your speech can change the world. According to Keith & Lundber
(2024), effective speeches motivate us to make changes on our campuses, in our
communities, and in a nation.
The power of your speech can change your world. For instance, you give a speech
in your job interview, which determines your chance of getting a job that you
have been longing for.
13 By learning to develop your public speaking skill, you will find your voice, foster
connections, and leave positive impacts on others.
