TECHNIQUES
In PUBLIC SPEAKING ___

INTRODUCTION
Delivering speeches to a large audience can be daunting without experience. This lesson focuses
on public speaking techniques, urging practice through prepared or impromptu speeches.
Prepared speeches allow time for preparation, while impromptu speeches are spontaneous. The
goal is to master speaking confidently in different scenarios, helping to tackle discomfort and
enhance communication skills.

Public speaking involves conveying information to an audience, offering benefits like critical
thinking skills, confidence, and strong communication abilities. Prepared speeches allow for
research and practice, enhancing delivery and impact. They can be memorized or delivered with
notes. Impromptu speeches, requiring quick thinking, test the speaker's ability to gather
thoughts and maintain composure on the spot. Both forms are valuable in academic,
professional, and personal settings, helping individuals effectively communicate and engage
with diverse audiences. Developing public speaking skills prepares individuals for future
challenges and opportunities where effective communication is essential.

Techniques in Public Speaking

What makes a good public speaker? Here are some techniques that may work best when
speaking before a large audience.

1. Know your purpose: Understand why you're speaking - to inform, persuade, or

inspire. This helps you focus your discussion and avoid confusing your audience.
2. Be familiar with your topic: Research your topic so you can speak confidently
and your audience can feel that confidence.
3. Consider your audience: Understand who you are speaking to so you can plan the right
content, language, and approach.
4. Plan ahead of time: Prepare in advance to avoid looking unprepared and
nervous in front of your audience.
5. Use non-verbal cues: Gestures and eye contact are important for clear
communication, but don't overdo it to avoid distractions.
6. Remain calm: Stay composed to deliver your speech effectively, even if it's
impromptu. Deep breaths and a focused mindset help.
7. Practice: Practice makes perfect, so keep practicing to improve and identify
areas for enhancement.
8. Watch your words: Choose your words carefully to maintain credibility and
reputation.
9. Speak with clarity: Focus on proper pronunciation, intonation, and pacing to
ensure your ideas are clearly understood.
10. Know the essential etiquettes: Understand the do’s and don’ts of public speaking to
maintain professionalism.
11. Use visuals when necessary: Visual aids can enhance your speech when appropriate
and help convey information more effectively. Make sure they support your talk without
taking the spotlight
12. Dress comfortably and appropriately: Dress in a way that makes you feel at ease but
also shows respect and formality.
13. Welcome feedback: Stay open to questions, comments, and criticisms. They can help
you grow and improve your speaking style.
