STS FINAL

The document contains metacognitive reading reports on two articles: Sunderland's on biodiversity and food security, and Dangour & Thomson's on climate and health. Key insights include the importance of integrating biodiversity in agriculture for food security and recognizing climate change's direct impacts on human health. Discussion questions focus on strategies for balancing biodiversity conservation with agricultural practices and addressing health threats posed by climate change in vulnerable communities.

FINAL
ACTIVITY 1
Instruction: Read Sunderland’s (2011) article titled “food security: Why is
biodiversity important?” Then, accomplish the metacognitive reading report
format below.

1. Difficult Concepts
a. Biodiversity in Agricultural Systems
- Because it contrasts with the traditional emphasis on
monoculture farming, biodiversity in agricultural systems refers to the
variety of species and genetic resources that support ecosystem
processes necessary for sustainable food production. This concept can
be challenging to comprehend.
b. Ecosystem Services
- Ecosystem services are natural processes like pollination and
soil fertility that are critical for agriculture but are often overlooked,
making it hard to appreciate their importance in maintaining long-term
food security.
2. Learning Insights
a. Before reading the article, I thought that
- food security only depended on increasing agricultural
production.
However, after reading the article, I now think/learned
that
- food security also relies on maintaining biodiversity to ensure
resilient and sustainable agricultural systems.
b. Before reading the article, I thought that
- conservation and agriculture were separate goals.
However, after reading the article, I now think/learned
that
- conservation and agriculture must be integrated to achieve
both food security and biodiversity conservation.
3. Discussion Questions
a. How can the integration of biodiversity conservation into agricultural
systems be effectively achieved, especially in industrial farming
systems that prioritize high yields?

b. What are some potential challenges or trade-offs that might arise
when attempting to balance food security with biodiversity
conservation in tropical regions?

FINAL
ACTIVITY 2
Instruction: Read the explainer titled “How Climate Affects Health”
(Dangour & Thomson, 2022). Then, accomplish the metacognitive reading
report below.

1. Difficult Concepts
a. Adaptation and mitigation strategies
- It can be challenging to strike a balance and carry out
adaptation and mitigation strategies successfully in various
geographical areas. Adaptation strategies include both steps to adapt
to the inevitable impacts of climate change and mitigation techniques,
which aim to lessen the impact of the phenomenon.
b. Climate-sensitive health risks
- Health concerns that are directly tied to climate change include
infectious diseases, heat-associated ailments, and poor air quality.
Because of their complexity and worldwide scope, these dangers can
be difficult to completely understand.
2. Learning Insights
a. Before reading the article, I thought that
- climate change only affected the environment and did not have
direct impacts on human health.
However, after reading the article, I now think/learned
that
- climate change significantly harms human health through
extreme weather events, food insecurity, and the spread of diseases.
b. Before reading the article, I thought that
- climate change was a future problem that we could address
later. However, after reading the article, I now think/learned
that
- climate change is already affecting global health, and urgent
action is needed to mitigate its impact.
3. Discussion Questions

______________________________________________________________________________
a. How can cities, especially low-income areas, effectively prepare for
the health threats that climate change poses, such heat waves and air
pollution?
b. Which strategies work best for helping vulnerable groups adjust to
the health effects of climate change, particularly in low- and middle-
income nations?
