What is “Tropical Climate”-

The tropical climate in the Köppen system is defined as having an average temperature in
every month of above 18°C. There is no winter season, and annual rainfall is large and
exceeds the annual evaporation. The tropics are regions of Earth that lie roughly in the
middle of the globe. The tropics between the latitude lines of the Tropic of Cancer and the
Tropic of Capricorn. The tropics include the Equator and parts of North America, South
America, Africa, Asia, and Australia. There are three climate types in the tropical
group: tropical wet; tropical monsoon; and tropical wet and dry. Places with a tropical
wet climate are also known as rainforests. These equatorial regions have the most
predictable weather on Earth, with warm temperatures and regular rainfall. The weather in
the tropics is basically hot and humid. This is primarily due to the earth receiving more solar
radiation than it re-radiates back to space. This excessive heating generates weather that
can impact any other location on the globe. This energy imbalance drives the circulation of
the atmosphere.

What are three features of a tropical climate?

Tropical climates are hot, humid, and rainy climates found mostly between the Tropic
of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. As described by Köppen, the four main types
of tropical climates are tropical rainforest, tropical monsoon climate, tropical savanna
(dry winter), and tropical savanna (dry summer).

Discuss briefly the three modes of heat transfer

When two objects of different temperature are placed together, heat energy passes from the hotter
object to the cooler object until both objects are at the same temperature. Thus, the Transfer or
Movement of Heat requires a difference of temperature (Heat Energy moves From Hot To Cold
Areas)

CONDUCTION – Conduction is the way in which heat is transferred mainly through Solids. In
conduction heat moves from the hotter region in a solid to the colder region by the vibrations of
adjacent particles. Note the particles itself don’t move from the hotter region to the colder region in
the solid but instead the particles vibrate more energetically when heated transferring energy from
neighbour particles to neighbour particles to neighbour particles until the entire solid is heated.

Examples of Conduction 1) When frying vegetables in a pan. Heat transfer takes place from flame to
the pan and then to the vegetables. 2) Touching a stove and being burned (heat travels from the
stove to your hand) 3) Ice cooling down your hand (heat travels from your hand and the surrounds
to the ice) 4) A metal pan warming on a stove

Energy moves through a medium( liquid, solid, gas) from one substance to another, in this case from
the liquid water the solid metal of the metal spoon. The heat energy causes he molecules in the
bowl of he spoon to vibrate at a fast speed as it is transferred to them. As the molecules in the bowl
of the spoon vibrate, other molecules along the handle also vibrate and the heat energy is
trabnsferred along the spoon . If the molecules are very close together the heat is transferred very
quickly . This method of transferring heat is called conduction.

Conducted heat is transferred fom one molecule to another by contract .The object to be heated

Must be in direct contact with the source of heat. This is what happens when a pot or saucepan is on
a burner or flame and when you use a metal spoon to stir your cup of hot beverage. Heat is
transferred through the cooking utensil and through the food by conduction. The thermal energy is
conducted from the hot end to the cold end. It is transferred from atom to atom. At the end the
atoms are vibrating a lot. This vibration is gradually passed along to the other atoms as they bump
into each other. This happens in all substances but in a metal something exta happens. A metal has
many free-moving electrons. These free electrons can travel through the metal, transferring the
energy more quickly. Insulators do not have these free electrons. This explains why mmetals are
good conductors of thermal energy and electricity.
CONVECTION

Convection is the rapid transfer of heat energy by the movement of molecules through liquids
and gases. It operates on the principle of an exchange of hot and cold gases. When gases and
liquids are heated, they expand, become less dense and are able to rise. As the hot gas or liquid
rises, the cooler and denser gas or liquid further away from the source of heat moves downward to
the heat source and takes the place of the gas or liquid that has moved upwards. The cooler liquid
or gas now gets heated and rises. This movement sets up a current or constant flow of gas or liquid
from bottom to top and top to bottom.

Currents of moving molecules in a gas or liquid are called convection currents. This is what
happens to air in a hot oven and to the liquid when cooking food in liquids or fat over a flame.

Water is a very good substance to carry the unwanted thermal energy away from the engine to the
‘radiator’- ( a heat exchanger where the hot water gives up its energy to the air).

The sun can cause very lage convection currents which we call wind

In the day-time the land warms up more than the sea. The warm air rises over the land and cool air
falls over the sea. So we feel a sea breeze.

Rising convection currents over the land are used by glider pilots to keep their planes in the air.

CONVECTION - Convection is the main way in which heat is transferred through liquids and gases.
When particles of a liquid or gas is heated it expands and rises, this leads to the cooler particles of
the liquid or gas descends. This creates convection currents. Example of Convection 1) Boiling a pan
of water on a stove 2) Ocean currents 3) In a hot air balloon hot air rises pushing the balloon up in
the air.

RADIATION- Radiation is the way in which heat is transferred across a vacuum (out in space) as well
gases. Heat radiation is also called Infrared radiation and it involves heat being transferred by waves.
Example of Radiation: • Heat from the sun warming the earth • Heat from a lightbulb warming your
hand • Heat from a fire warming your hand. RADIATION

RADIATION is the heat energy in the form of electromagnetic waves. The heat energy travels
directly from its source to the object to be heated. The heat waves will affect any object in their
path. This is what happens when food is cooked by grilling, microwave cooking : with the use of an
electric toaster, toaster oven or barbecue grill. When the heat rays come in contact with an object,
some of the waves are absorbed and felt as heat, others are reflected . The further away the object
from the source of heat, the fewer rays it will receive and thev less hot it will become.
Energy fron the sun reaches us after travelling through space at the speed of light. When this energy
hits an object, sone of it is taken in or absorbed. This makes the molecules vibrate more- and so the
object is hotter. All objects take in and give out energy ( as radiation0 all the time. Different objects
emit different amts. Of radiation depending on heir temperature and their surface.

A dull bl;ack surface is a good absorber of radiation. It takes in and gives out a lot of radiation

A bright shiny surface is a poor absorber of radiation- it reflects the radiation away.
