together soon to catch up on each other's news.
Speaking about news you'll never guess what happened to me recently.
You know I've always wanted to go hiking. Well, I finally managed to go but it
didn't turn out too well. I went with some friends of mine who are very
experienced hikers. I'm grateful I did because I don't know what I would have
done without them.
We set off early in the morning and started walking. At first. I thought to
myself that hiking is quite easy but then I started feeling really tired and I could
hardly keep up with the rest of the group. We were crossing a field. When I felt
a sharp pain in my left leg. I thought it was a thorny bush or something and
kept going because the rest of the group was far ahead. After a while I broke
out into a cold sweat and started feeling very dizzy. Then I passed out.
When I finally came round, my friends told me that a snake had bitten.
One of my friends who knew about snake bites had tied my leg and sucked out
the poison. Luckily, they had an antidote for snake bites and I soon felt much
better.
In the future, I will think twice about going hiking, write soon to tell me
your news.
Take care,
Elvis

Google Earth
When the Internet first came into use, no one really knew just what it was,
what it could do, or even what to do with it. However, in a few short years, the
possibilities soon became obvious. Suddenly, everyone has a "Hotmail" or
"yahoo" account and letters written on paper became a thing of the past. As if
over night, we all knew what a web page was, we were "chatting" online, and we
had access to a world of information, from database to dictionary and Wikipedia.
Then the unthinkable happened. With the touch of a button, we could
tune into not only a world of information, but also the world itself. Google Earth
is perhaps one of the most incredible technological applications of the internet,
whose importance we haven't yet fully understood.
Think about it. Some 100 years ago, people had just begun to use the
telephone. The car and airplane were slowly coming into use. For most people,
the idea of intercontinental travel and communication was similar to a modern
day person considering a day trip to the Moon. Knowledge of the Earth was then
limited to the globe sitting on an office desk or the world map put up on the
school wall. Indeed, the world has become much smaller. We are no longer
individuals living in isolated countries. We are now a global network of human
beings walking up to a future single community. Google Earth is just one
indication, one symptom of what is to come.
It reveals the history of humanity, of our planet, of our earth. It also reveals our
future, responsibility our togetherness and the need for commitment to care for
this, our home.

As my train was not due to leave for another hour, I had plenty of time to
spare. I made my way to the luggage office to collect the heavy suitcase I had
left there three days before. There were only a few people waiting, and I took
out my wallet to find the receipt for my case. The receipt did not seem to be
where I had left it. I emptied the contents of the wallet, but the receipt was
nowhere to be found.
When my turn came, I explained the situation sorrowfully to the assistant.
The man looked at me suspiciously as if to say that he had heard this type of
story many times and asked me to describe the case.
The assistant then gave me a form and told me to make a list of the chief
contents of the case. If they were correct, he said, I could take the case away. I
tried to remember all the articles I had hurriedly packed and wrote them down as
they came to me.
After I had done this, I went to look among the shelves. There were
hundreds of cases there. After examining the articles inside, the assistant was
soon satisfied that it was mine and told me I could take the case away. Again, I
took out my wallet: this time to pay. I pulled out a ten-shilling note and the
'lost' receipt slipped out with it. I could not help blushing and glanced up at the
assistant. He was nodding his head knowingly, as if to say that he had often

undeniable educational benefits, especially to children, School subjects become
more interesting when presented on a computer screen.

games which can be played on them. In addition, computers are valuable to any
business, making life easier and saving time by being capable of storing and

4. Read the following passage and answer the questions below:
Have you ever noticed advertisements which say "learn a foreign
language in 6 weeks, or get your money back! From the first day your
pronunciation will be excellent. Just seen………….." and so on? Of course, it never
happens quite like that. The only language that is easy to learn is the mother
tongue. And think how much practice that gets! Before the Second World War
people usually learnt a foreign language in order to read the literature of the
country. Now speaking the foreign language is what most people want. Every
year, many millions of people start learning one. How do they do it?
Some people try at home, with books and records or tapes, some use
radio or television programmes, others go to evening classes. If they use the
language only 2 or 3 times a week, learning it will take a long time, like
language learning at school. A few people try to learn a language fast by
studying for 6 or more hours a day. It is clearly easier to learn the language in
the country where it is spoken. However, most people cannot afford this, and,
for many, it is not necessary. They need the language in order to do their work
better. For example, scientist and doctors chiefly need to be able to read books
and reports in the foreign language. Whether the language is learnt quickly or
slowly, it is hard work. Machines and good books will help, but they cannot do
the student's work for him.

4. Read the following passage and answer the questions below:
Video and television are responsible for the declining interest in reading
among the young. While they may be harmless in themselves, they do nothing
to build up reading skills. If some of the children spend watching television were
devoted to reading, the population would be better educated.
Watching a story is a totally passive pastime. Someone else has made the
decisions about everything in the story. Reading a story is an active partnership
between writer and reader. Ideas are sketched and the mind of the reader
creates the rest. Watching something is easier.
The problem is that many children read very slowly. They decode a page
or two in a class and about the same again for homework. It is hardly surprising
that such children then declare that they find reading boring and prefer to
watch television. Their difficulty is not reading the words - it is interpreting
them. They need to be able to read fast enough to feed the mind's hunger for a
strong and independent reader.
Parents need to be convinced of the importance of preventing their
children from wasting their hours on inert viewing. Without the television the
child is likely to turn to books for entertainment.
A. Answer the following questions:
1. What is the writer's main objection to video and TV?
2. Why is watching a story easier than reading it?
3. How can children be good readers?
B. Choose the correct answers.
4. Watching a story is a totally (passive - positive - useful - strong) pastime.
5. Without the (mobile - telephone - television - heater) the child is likely to turn to
books for entertainment.
