ARTS APPRECIATION

LESSON OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, the student should be able to:

a. explain the meaning, nature of arts and its function


b. determine the subject of art and its function
c. reflect on the functions of art with regard to their personal contribution to the development of
art

THE MEANING AND IMPORTANCE OF ART

THE NATURE OF ART

Art is very important in our lives. It constitutes one of the oldest and most important means of
expression develop by man. Art has been defined in various ways. Hereunder are some of the
definitions given by the various authors.

Art is derived from the Latin word “ars” meaning the ability or skill – J.V Estolas
Art is taken from the Italian word “artis” which means craftsmanship, skills mastery of
form, inventiveness and the association that exist between form and ideas.
Art is a product of man’s need to express himself-F. Zulueta
Art is concerned itself with the communication of certain ideas and feelings by means of
sensuous medium, color, sound, bronze marble, word and film
Art is that which brings life in harmony with the beauty of the world
Art is an attitude of spirit, a state of mind –one of its own satisfactions and fulfilling, a
shaping of matter to new and more significant form-John Dewey
Art is a skillful arrangement of composition of some common movement, words one
stones, wood etc., to express human feelings, emotion or though in a perfect meaningful
and enjoyable way

THE SUBJECT OF ART
In any art form – be it painting, music, sculpture, architecture, or the dance –there is always a
subject that serves as the foundation of the creation of an artwork. A subject of art is usually
anything that is represented in the artwork. It may be an object, scene or event.

Artworks that depict something easily recognized by the most people are called
representational or objective arts.

Artworks that have no resemblance to any real subject are called non- representational Art or
non- objective Art.

THE FUNCTION OF ART


Every art has definite function since it satisfies particular needs. To sum up the four main
function of art are:
AESTHETIC FUNCTION- Though art, man becomes conscious of the beauty of
nature. He benefits from his own work and from those done by his fellowmen
UTILITARIAN FUNCTION- With the creation of the various forms of art, man now
lives in comfort and happiness.
CULTURAL FUNCTION- Through the printed matter, art transmits and preserves
skills and knowledge from one generation to another.
SOCIAL FUNCTION- Through civic and graphic arts, man learns to love and help each
other.
THE SCOPE OF ART
Various authors classify arts in different ways. According to Manaois, there are two (2) general
dimensions of arts, namely:
FINE ARTS OR INDEPENDENT ARTS –are music, painting, sculpture, architecture,
literature, dancing and drama.

PRACTICAL ARTS OR USEFUL UTILITARIAN ARTS- are applied in or household art,
civic art, commercial art, graphic art, agricultural art, distributive art, and fishery art.

THE ORIGIN OF ART


Art is viewed as reflection of creative and ingenuity and inventiveness within the culture. It is
seen not only in terms of its style and craftsmanship but its functional interaction with all the
elements that constitute human life and culture.

The history of art focuses on objects made by humans in visual form


for aesthetic purposes. Visual art can be classified in diverse ways, such as separating fine
arts from applied arts; inclusively focusing on human creativity; or focusing on different media
such as architecture, sculpture, painting, film, photography, and graphic arts. In recent years,
technological advances have led to video art, computer art, performance
art, animation, television, and videogames.

b. determine the meaning conveyed by the art and how an artwork makes life more
meaningful.
c. appreciate the vase of self-trust in producing art.
d. compare and contrast the different media in art production.
e. contribute a simple art presentation.

MEDIUM AND TECHNIQUE

Medium –Which comes from the Latin word “medium” denotes the means by which an artist
communicates his idea. These are materials which are used by an artist to interpret his feelings or
thoughts.

Technique- is the manner in which the artist controls his medium to achieve the desired effect. It
is the ability with which he fulfills the technical requirements of his particular work of art.

THE ARTIST AND HIS MEDIUM – The artist thinks, feels, and gives shape to his vision in
terms of his medium. When an artist chooses his medium, he believes that this can best express
the idea he wants to convey.

THE ARTIST AND HIS TECHNIQUES –Apparently artist differ from one another in
technique even if they use same medium. A musician’s is his ability to make music sound the
way he wants.

MEDIUM OF THE VISUAL ARTS

Visual arts are those arts that are perceived with our eyes. The most common visual arts
are painting, sculpture, and architecture their mediums are discussed as follows.

PAINTING- Painting is that art of creating meaningful effects on a flat surface by use of
pigments. The materials of the painter are pigments applied to wet plaster, canvas, wood, or
paper.

WATERCOLOR- as a medium is difficult to handle because it is difficult to produce warm and


rich tones but it invites brilliance and a variety of hues.

FRESCO- This is painting on a moist plaster surface with colors ground in water or a limewater
mixture.

TEMPERA- paints are mineral pigments mixed with egg yolks or egg white and ore

PASTEL – This is a stick of dried paste made of pigment round with chalk and compounded
with gum water.

ENCASTIC- This is one of the early mediums used by the Egyptians for the painted portrait on
mummy cases. This is done by painting with wax fixed and heat

OIL- Oil painting is the most expensive art activities today because of the prohibited cause of
materials.

ACRYLIC-This medium is used popularly by contemporary painters because of the


transparency and quick-drying characteristics of watercolor and the flexibility of oil combined.

MOSAIC – Mosaic is a picture or decoration made of small pieces of inlaid colored stones or
glass tesserae.

STAINED GLASS – stained glass is an artwork is common in Gothic cathedral and churches.
This is made by combining many small pieces of colored glass which are held together by bands
of lead.

TAPESTRY – This is a fabric consist of warp upon which colored threads are woven by hand to
produce a design, often pictorials wall hangings and furniture covering.

SCULPTURE

In choosing a subject for sculpture, the most important thing to be considered is, the material.
The materials available for sculpture are limitless. Each of these materials presents interesting
motivation to challenge the sculptor’s creativity

Stone- is the hard and brittle substance formed from mineral and earth material. The finished
product is granular and dull in appearance. These are normally used for gravestones in
cemeteries.

Jade – is a fine, colorful stone, usually green, and used widely in Ancient China, it is highly
esteemed as an ornamental stone for carving and fashion jewelry.

Ivory- which comes from the main parts of tusk of elephants is the hard substance used to make
carvings and billiard balls.

Metals- includes any of the class of elementary substances such as gold, silver, or popper all of
which are crystalline when solid and many which are characterized by capacity, ductility
conductivity and peculiar when freshly fractured.

Bronze- is one of the oldest alloys of metal composing chiefly of copper and tin with color is
one of the most universally popular metals for sculpture.

Brass- an alloy of copper and zinc, is not popularly used by artist because of limitations as a
medium.

Copper- which has a peculiar brilliance is used as a costing medium. This is basically shaped by
hammering.

Gold and Silver- are used as casting materials for small objects like medals, coins, and pieces of
jewelry.

Lead-a bluish gray metal, flexible and permanent material is used for casting and forging.

Plaster- is a composition of lime, sand and water. Plaster is worked on an armature of metal
wires and rod in addition to various metals and fiber.

Clay- is a naturally earthly material that has the nature of plasticity when wet, consisting
essentially of hydrated silicates of aluminum used for making bricks and ceramics.

Glass- is medium that is hard, brittle, non-crystalline, more or less transparent substances
produced by fusion, usually consisting of mutually dissolved silica and silicates and contains
soda and lime.

Terra cotta- is the tenders of sculptural materials. Most oriental sculpture deals in this medium.

ARCHITECTURE

Architecture is an art. In its strictest meaning, it is the art of designing a building and
supervising its construction. It may also be regarded as the procedure assisted with the
conception of an idea and its realization in terms of building materials.

MATERIALS OF NATURE
Stone- is one of the oldest perhaps the most permanent material. The most used material of great
architecture in the world.
Lime stones – This type of stone has fine even texture and its color range from a light cream to
buff from a light gray to darker.
Granite-This is a coarse-grained stone and useful for large, bold forms with little carving.
Marble-It is a type of limestone sufficiently close in texture to admit of being polished.
Sandstone-It consists of various colors from white to different tints of red, blue, brown or gray.
