The
Department of
Tourism
(Filipino:
Kagawaran ng
Turismo
) of
the Philippines, mor
e popularly known
as
DOT
, is
the departmentof
the Philippine
governmentwhich is
primarily charged
with the
responsibility to
encourage,
promote, and
develop tourism as
a major socio-
economic activity to
generate foreign
currency and
employment, and to
spread thebenefits
of tourism to both
the private and
public sector.
Tourism Secretary

Ramon Jimenez,
Jr.
History
Before the
Spaniards arrived
and further
colonized the
Philippines, there
were enough
evidences
suggesting thatthe
local inhabitants
of the Philippines
have already been
in contact with
outsiders such as
the Chinese,
Malays,Japanese
and other
Southeast and
East
Asian countries
through trade.
Artifacts found
from several
archeologicalsites
all over the
country
were recovered
like jars, pots,
ancient tools,
and utensils
bearing some
brand that it
camefrom another
place. In fact,
some of the relics
were found in
deep soil on the
eastern part of
Bohol.Shortly after
Ferdinand
Magellan and his
men were
defeated by Lapu-
lapu (a tribe
leader in Cebu),
another
dispatchwas sent
off from Spain. It
was Captain
General Miguel
Lopez de Legazpi,
a Spanish
Conquistador,
who drifted tothe
shores of Bohol.
He befriended the
natives by means
of a blood
compact with Datu
Sikatuna in 1565.
This act
ofbrotherhood
was the first
international treaty
of
friendship betwee
n the Filipinos
and Spaniards.
Later on, the
bloodcompact
would then
become an annual
event called the
Sandugo Festival
where thousands
of tourists would
comeand witness
this vivacious
affair in Tagbilaran
City.From then on,
the Spaniards
slowly won the
hearts of the
natives and began
their colonization
agenda to
wiselyutilize the
rich and
untouched
resources in Bohol
that were of much
use to the
Europeans. Later
on, several
uprising
would emerge in
protest of the
Spaniards’ harsh
treatment of the
natives and
religious conflicts.
Among these
rebellions, there
were two major
revolts that remain
imprinted on
Bohol history: a
short revolt led
byTamblot in
1621-1622, and
the famous
Dagohoy rebellion
which lasted 85
years from 1744-
1829. The latter,
as amatter of fact,
was considered as
the longest
uprising in
Philippine
History.Furthermor
e, grueling
attempts were
made by the
Spaniards to stop
the rebellion,
but failed
miserably; even a
troopof 2,200
soldiers sent by
General Ricafort
was not
successful.Two
years before the
revolt ended in
1829, Francisco
Dagohoy died. In
the end, the
captured followers
weregranted
pardon and began
a new life in other
towns surrounding
their hometown of
Danao. This
revolt, in turn, led
tothe
establishment of a
free
Boholano govern
ment shortly
thereafter.

old and known to
be the

form their ankles
and enable them
to leap to
almost10 feet
from tree to tree.
Their long, partly
hairless tail arcs
over their back
when they hop
on the

The
Department of
Tourism
(Filipino:
Kagawaran ng
Turismo
) of
the Philippines, mor
e popularly known
as
DOT
, is
the departmentof
the Philippine
governmentwhich is
primarily charged
with the
responsibility to
encourage,
promote, and
develop tourism as
a major socio-
economic activity to
generate foreign
currency and
employment, and to
spread thebenefits
of tourism to both
the private and
public sector.
Tourism Secretary

Ramon Jimenez,
Jr.

History
Before the
Spaniards arrived
and further
colonized the
Philippines, there
were enough
evidences
suggesting thatthe
local inhabitants
of the Philippines
have already been
in contact with
outsiders such as
the Chinese,
Malays,Japanese
and other
Southeast and
East
Asian countries
through trade.
Artifacts found
from several
archeologicalsites
all over the
country
were recovered
like jars, pots,
ancient tools,
and utensils
bearing some
brand that it
camefrom another
place. In fact,
some of the relics
were found in
deep soil on the
eastern part of
Bohol.Shortly after
Ferdinand
Magellan and his
men were
defeated by Lapu-
lapu (a tribe
leader in Cebu),
another
dispatchwas sent
off from Spain. It
was Captain
General Miguel
Lopez de Legazpi,
a Spanish
Conquistador,
who drifted tothe
shores of Bohol.
He befriended the
natives by means
of a blood
compact with Datu
Sikatuna in 1565.
This act
ofbrotherhood
was the first
international treaty
of
friendship betwee
n the Filipinos
and Spaniards.
Later on, the
bloodcompact
would then
become an annual
event called the
Sandugo Festival
where thousands
of tourists would
comeand witness
this vivacious
affair in Tagbilaran
City.From then on,
the Spaniards
slowly won the
hearts of the
natives and began
their colonization
agenda to
wiselyutilize the
rich and
untouched
resources in Bohol
that were of much
use to the
Europeans. Later
on, several
uprising
would emerge in
protest of the
Spaniards’ harsh
treatment of the
natives and
religious conflicts.
Among these
rebellions, there
were two major
revolts that remain
imprinted on
Bohol history: a
short revolt led
byTamblot in
1621-1622, and
the famous
Dagohoy rebellion
which lasted 85
years from 1744-
1829. The latter,
as amatter of fact,
was considered as
the longest
uprising in
Philippine
History.Furthermor
e, grueling
attempts were
made by the
Spaniards to stop
the rebellion,
but failed
miserably; even a
troopof 2,200
soldiers sent by
General Ricafort
was not
successful.Two
years before the
revolt ended in
1829, Francisco
Dagohoy died. In
the end, the
captured followers
weregranted
pardon and began
a new life in other
towns surrounding
their hometown of
Danao. This
revolt, in turn, led
tothe
establishment of a
free
Boholano govern
ment shortly
thereafter.

estimated to be
45 million years
old and known to
be the
smallest
primate. It’s
home is in Bohol.
It has gray fur
and nearly gray
tail. Tarsiers are
named as such
because of their
special
elongated tarsal
bones, which
form their ankles
and enable them
to leap to
almost10 feet
from tree to tree.
Their long, partly
hairless tail arcs
over their back
when they hop
on the
ground.Tarsiers
are small and
weigh only about
110 to 145
grams or 4 to 5
ounces. The
most notable
feature oftarsiers
is their eyes,
which are each
bigger than its
entire brain. Like
owls, tarsiers
can rotate their
headalmost 180

Topography
and Drainage
Bohol's
mainland
exhibits the
following
salient
physiographic
units:1. The
east and west
coast display
northeast
trending
ranging up to
870 meters in
elevation(Mt.
Mayana) that
drop steeply
to the coast.
These ranges
reflect the
major
structural
units ofthe
island.2. The
central
(Carmen area)
and northern
part of the
island
(Trinidad) are
a vast
expanse
ofrelatively
rolling plains
and
flatlands.3.
The

inCarmen-
Batuan-Bilar-

in the east
central part of
the island is
suggestion of

elongated
cluster of hills
of moderate
height lies in
the
northeastern
part of the
island(Ubay
area).5. An
east-west
ridge
connects
Alicia with
Carmen.6.
The Anda
Peninsula and
Loon
Peninsula
strongly
suggest
elevated
plateaus.7. At
least five
different Plio-
pleistocene
terrace levels
ranging in
height from
10 to
300meters
have been
etched both in
Carmen
sandstone
and shales
and Maribojoc
limestone.8.
The drainage
pattern is
generally
radial. The
west is
drained
by the Abatan
River (350
sq.km.) and
Wahig-
Inabanga
Rivers (570
sq. km.); the
north by Alog,
Ipil (250 sq.

Rivers; the
east by the
Mabini and
Guindulman
Rivers; and
the south by
the Loboc-
Loay (160

Jagna
and Garcia-
Hernandez
Rivers. These
rivers are not
important
fornavigation
purpose.9.
