6.5 CURVE

The document discusses transition curves in the context of road and railway design, detailing the calculations for length, deflection angles, and radial acceleration. It presents formulas for determining the length of a transition curve based on vehicle speed and comfort conditions. Additionally, it explains the relationship between deflection angles and spiral angles in transition curves.

LENGTH OF TRANSITION CURVE

Now, radial acceleration = V2/R

And, Rate of change of radial acceleration (α) = V2/R = V2

T RT

Or, T = V2/αR …………………………(1)

Again, If the length of transition curve is L and speed of vehicle is V,

then time taken by the vehicle to pass over the transition curve,

T = L/V ……………………….(2)

Thus,
Solving from equation 1 and 2, we get

L = V3/(α R)

For comfort condition, the value of α = 0.3 m/s3

DEFLECTION ANGLES IN TRANSITION CURVE

The deflection angle is the angle from the tangent to any point on the curve.

The deflection angle is very nearly equal to one-third of the spiral angle.

The angle between the initial tangent and common tangent at the junction
of transition curve and circular curve is called spiral angle.

We have the equation of Cubic spiral, Deflection angle (α)

Y = l3/6RL
Again we have,
Deflection angle (α) = Y/l (in radian)
Or, α = l3/6RL x 1/l = l2/6RL (in radian)
Or, α = l2/6RL x 1800/π (in degree)

Or, α = l2/6RL x 1800/π x 60 (in minute)

Or, α = 573 l2/RL (minute

Now, Deflection angle for full length of transition curve

α = l2/6RL = L2/6RL

= L/6R

= 1x L
