Mass and Volume

This document is a detailed lesson plan for a Science 10 class at Quirino General High School, focusing on the properties of gases and their behavior based on kinetic molecular theory. The lesson includes objectives, activities, and evaluation methods to help students understand the relationship between gas volume, pressure, and temperature. It also outlines the materials needed and the procedure for conducting the lesson, including preliminary activities and discussions.

DETAILED LESSON PLAN in Science 10
Content Standard: The learners demonstrate understanding of:
How gases behave based on the motion and relative distances between gas
particles.
Learning Competency: Investigate the relationship between:
1. Volume and pressure at constant temperature of a gas;
2. Volume and temperature at constant pressure of gas;
3. Explains these relationships using the kinetic molecular theory.

Objectives
At the end of this lesson the students will be able to:
A. Identify some properties of gases like mass and volume;
B. Describe mass and volume as properties of gases;
C. Display self awareness in properties of gases.
II. Content
A. Topic: Properties of Gas
B. Learner’s Material: Science 10 Quarter 4 - Module 1

Before we begin, anyone from the
class who wants to lead us a prayer? Sir!

Yes, Charmayne?
(Charmayne leads the prayer) Amen!
Thank you, Charmayne!

2. Greetings
Good morning, sir!
Good morning class!

How are you today? We are doing great sir!

Good to hear that!

3. Checking of Attendance

May I ask our class secretary who

is/are absent today?

Okay, good!
Everyone is present, Sir!
4. Setting of Classroom Rules

I just have three class rules class:

Be Cooperative
Be Active
Be Respectful

Do you understand class?

Yes Sir!
Review of the previous
Lesson
Before moving on to our next
topic, let us first have a short
review on our previous
discussion, what did we discuss
last time class?

Sir, we discussed the different behavior

of gases.

Correct, and what are those

behavior of gases? Sir, we have expansibility,
compressibility, and diffusibility.

Alright, it’s good that you still

remember our previous topic.

5. Motivation

Alright class, before we proceed with

our topic for today, let us first have
a short activity, I will inflate a
balloon and you just tell me what do
you observe, is that clear class? Yes Sir!

Alright, now what do you observe in

the balloon I just inflated? Sir, the balloon went from being
deflated and became inflated.

What takes up space inside the

balloon? Sir, I think it’s gas or air that is filling up
the balloon.

Do you think it has mass? Yes Sir, I think it has mass.

Those questions will be answered

when we go to our discussion.

B. Lesson Proper

1. Activity

Activity: Getting to know Gases

To start with our discussion, I will
perform an activity here in front while
you observe and record the data that
we got, after that we will answer the

guide questions.

Do you understand class? Yes Sir!

Guide Questions:

Activity A
Q1. Is the mass of the deflated balloon
different from the mass of the inflated
balloon?
Q2. Which is heavier, the inflated
balloon or the deflated balloon?
Q3. What can you infer in this activity?

Activity B

Q1.What happens to the volume

reading of the water-oil mixture when
air is introduced to it?

Q2. What does it indicate?

2. Analysis
Were you able to learn something
based on the activity that we had just
done? Yes Sir!

Now, let us answer the guide questions.

Yes Sir!
Thank you class, now we will proceed
with the discussion.

3. Abstraction

Let us now proceed to our discussion.

Properties of gas

Gas has many different properties and

variables which are measurable in
nature, first we have mass.
The amount of gas (or mass) is another
A. Mass or amount of moles measurable property of gas. The mass

of gas is related to its number of moles
and is generally expressed in kilogram
or gram.
Number of moles = mass of the gas /
molar mass of the gas

In symbols:
n = m/M

Gases also have mass, just like in our 1 kg = 1000 grams

activity, the inflated balloon filled with
air or gas gained mass.

What is Volume, Class?

B. Volume It is one of the measurable properties of
gas, which is denoted by the symbol V.
It is the amount of space occupied by
as gas sample. Its SI unit is in liters, it
can also be expressed in milliliters,
cubic centimeter, cubic meter, and
cubic decimeter.
1L = 1 dm3 = 1000mL = 1000 cm3

Do you understand class?

For example, gases take the volume of

any inflatable object such as tires,
balloons, and balls. Is that clear class?

Those were some of the measurable

properties of gas, do you have any None Sir!
questions class?

4. Application
Now that you know these properties of
gases, we will now discuss how this is
applied in real life, for example gas
used in scuba diving gears, airbags and

Answers for Evaluation
Very Good!
C. Evaluation
On a 1/4 sheet of paper, write true if
the statement is correct and write 1. True
false if it isn’t.

1. A gas with a larger mass will 2. False

always occupy a larger volume than
a gas with smaller gas.
3. False
2. Gases are incompressible,
meaning their volume cannot be
reduced. 4. False

3. A gas with a larger volume will

always have a larger mass. 5. True

4. If you compress gas, its mass

decreases.

5. Assuming constant density,

doubling the volume will also double
its mass.
