Vocabulary Phrase Usage

कर रही (kar rahee) means "doing" and comes from the verb करना (karnaa) "to
do".

If you're a female or talking about females, you say कर रही (kar rahee)

If you're a male or talking about males, you say कर रहा (kar rahaa)

If you're a group of males or talking about them, you say कर रहे (kar rahe)
देख रही (dekh rahee) means "watching" and comes from the verb देखना
(dekhnaa) "to see".

If you're a female or talking about females, you say देख रही (dekh rahee)

If you're a male or talking about males, you say देख रहा (dekh rahaa)

If you're a group of males or talking about them, you say देख रहे (dekh rahe)
3 तुम्हारा (tumhaaraa) means "your". It is a possessive pronoun used for
addressing others informally. In Hindi, possessive pronouns change according
to the gender and the number of the nouns being possessed and not on who
is doing the possessing. So,

for singular and plural female, you use तुम्हारी (tumhaaree)

for singular male, you use तुम्हारा (tumhaaraa)

for plural male, you use तुम्हारे (tumhaare)

Grammar Points
The focus of this lesson is "was" and "were"

Tum kal kyaa kar rahee thee.

"What were you doing yesterday?"
Hindi is a verb final language and follows the order Subject+ Object+ Verb.
Therefore the verbs "was" and "were" also come at the end of a sentence.
They change forms depending on the gender and the number of the subject.

1 For singular masculine "was", you use था (thaa)

2 For singular feminine "was", you use थी (thee)
3 For plural masculine "were", you use थे (the)
4 For plural feminine "were", you use थीं (theen)

Remember that you need to change not only these auxillary verbs but also
other main verbs and adjectives according to the gender and the number of
the subject.
Example:
1 मैं बस में बैठ रहा था। (Main bas men baith rahaa thaa.) "I was sitting in the
bus"---said by a male.
2 मैं बस में बैठ रही थी। (Main bas men baith rahee thee.) "I was sitting in the
bus"--said by a female.
3 हम बस में बैठ रहे थे। (Ham bas men baith rahe the.) "We were sitting in the
bus"--said by a group of males.
4 हम बस में बैठ रही थीं। (Ham bas men baith rahee theen.) "We were sitting in
the bus"--said by a group of females.

Showing respect
4 Sometimes, if you want to show repect towards the other person, you use
the plural form थे (the) and थीं (theen) even when using for a single person.
Examples:
1. मेरे पिताजी जापान में थे।
Mere pitaajee jaapaan men the.
"My father was in Japan."

2. कल सुनिताजी बीमार थीं।

Kal sunitaajee beemar theen.
"Ms Sunita was sick yesterday."

Examples from this lesson Tum kal kyaa kar rahee thee.
Main kriket dekh rahee thee.
Voh bhee kriket dekh rahaa thaa.
Examples from this dialog:

Sample Sentences:

1. 1. मैं भूखा था।

Main bhookhaa thaa.

"I was hungry."--said by a male.

1. 2. तुम कहाँ थी?

Language Tip/Language Expansion/Pronunciation Tip (use this section for
anything else)
The pronunciations of था (thaa), थे (the), थी (thee) and थीं (theen) can be a
little bit confusing. थी (thee) and थीं (theen) sound very similar but थीं (theen)
i.e. "were" is pronounced with a slight nasal tone. थे (the) is not pronounced
as the article "the" as in "the sun" in English, but is more like the
"the"sound in the word "theft".

Cricket is the most popular sport in India. It is a direct influence of the

British colonial rule. Today, many people play cricket or watch cricket all
over India although it is not quite the official national sport which is field
hockey. The cricket players are treated like stars. They earn millions by
endorsing products, shooting commercials and doing many other things that
sports players all over the world are engaged in. Sometimes, cricket has also
been used as a political tool. Matches between India and Pakistan have been
held in both the countries to boost relationships between them. India has a
very strong cricket team and cricket matches are one of those times the
country emerges passionately as one, where everyone is cheering for their
national team and their national heroes.
