SECOND SEMESTER 2018-2019

End-semester Examination, Course No: CE F 435, Time: 2:00-5:00 PM

Course Title: Introduction to Finite Element Method
Date: 3.5.2019, Max. Marks: 40, Duration: 3 Hours

Answer all of the seven questions. Use FEM only.

1. Solve for the axial displacement and stress in the tapered bar shown in the Figure below,
using one and then two constant area elements. Evaluate the area at the center of each
element length. Use that area for each element. Let 𝐴0 = 12.5 × 10−4 𝑚2 , 𝐿 = 0.5 𝑚, 𝐸 =
70 𝐺𝑃𝑎, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑃 = 5000𝑁. Compare your FE solutions with the exact solution.
(6 Marks)

2. For the plane truss shown in Figure, determine the horizontal and vertical displacements of
node 1 and the stresses in each element. All elements have 𝐸 = 210 𝐺𝑃𝑎 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐴 = 4.0 ×
10−4 𝑚2 . (6 Marks)

3. For the beam shown in Figure with internal hinge, determine the deflection at the hinge.
Let 𝐸 = 210𝐺𝑃𝑎 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐼 = 2 × 10−4 𝑚4 . (6 Marks)

4. For the rigid frame shown in Figure, determine the displacements and rotations of the
nodes, the element forces, and the reactions. Use the values of 𝐸 = 210𝐺𝑃𝑎, 𝐴 = 1.0 ×
10−2 𝑚2 , 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐼 = 1.0 × 10−4 𝑚4 . (8 Marks)

5. Evaluate the stiffness matrix for the element shown in Figure. The coordinates are in units
of cm. Assume plane stress conditions. Let 𝐸 = 210𝐺𝑃𝑎, 𝜈 = 0.25, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑐𝑘𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑠 𝑡 =
1 𝑐𝑚. The nodal displacements are given as u1 = 0.0, v1 = 0.0625 mm, u2 = 0.03 mm, v2 =
0.0 mm, u3 = 0.0 mm, v3 = 0.0625 mm. Determine the element stresses. (6 Marks)

6. Use Gaussian quadrature with one, two and three Gauss points to evaluate the integral 𝐼 =
1 cos 𝑠
∫−1 1−𝑠 2 𝑑𝑠. (4 Marks)
Number of points, Gauss point Location, 𝑥𝑖 Weight, 𝑤𝑖
n
1 x1 = 0.0 2.0
2 x1, x2 = ±0.5773502692 1.0
3 x2 = 0.0 8/9 = 0.8888888889
x1, x3 = ±0.7745966692 5/9 = 0.5555555556

7. For the three-noded linear strain bar with three coordinates of nodes x1, x2, and x3 shown
in Figure in the global coordinate system, show that the Jacobian determinate is |[𝐽]| =
𝐿⁄2. (4 Marks)
