: AIM
To determine the density of
1. regular shaped solid (cube made of plastic )
2. Liquid sample “A”
3. Irregular shaped solid
THEORY :
Density is defined as the mass per unit volume
Formula : D = MASS / VOLUME
Unit of mass = kg
Unit of volume = ( solid cm3, m3 ) ( liquids ml , l) cm3 =
ml
Density can be measured in lots of different units, but the
most commonly used units are grams per cubic centimetre
(g/cm³) and kilograms per cubic metre (kg/m³).
Solids have a high density . In liquids, the particles
can move around more freely, so they slide over
each other with some gaps between them . Liquids
typically have a lower density than solids.
A mass of liquid which is the same as a mass of solid
will have a slightly greater volume due to the change
in density. To compare, the density of liquid iron is
6.9 g/cm3, whereas the density of solid iron is
7.8g/cm. Liquids can change state further by being
evaporated to a gas state.
Density of a solid > density of a liquid > density of
gases
The relationship between density and temperature is
inversely proportional as the temperature increases
the density decreases
