Data collection is the systematic process of gathering and measuring
information that enables a researcher to answer specific research questions,
test hypotheses, and evaluate results. Regardless of the nature of your
research, whether quantitative or qualitative, accurate data collection is key
to upholding research integrity. Improper collection of data can cause
consequences that will compromise research quality, such as:
• distorted results and inaccurate answers to the research questions
• inability to replicate and validate the study
• causing harm to human participants and animal subjects
The method of data collection depends on the type of data that you
need to specifically answer your research question.
