Jose Montero y Vidal
• Born on January 28, 1851
• Born in Andalusian Town of Gergal
• Went to Madrid to study law
• Government official residing in Manila in 1872
• Civil Governor in colonial provinces of the Spanish Empire in 1875
• Married Carolina Marin-Baldo Burgueros in Murcia and had 4 children
• Was one of the most knowledgeable of the Spanish historians in the Philippines.
• At the time of Cavite Mutiny, he was a government official residing in Manila.
• Three of his major historical works are good references on Philippine History,
namely:
• El Archipelago Filipino y las islas Marinas
• Carolinas y Palaos: Su historia, Geografia y estadistica, Madrid 1886
• Historia general de Filipinas desde el descubrimiento de dichas islas hasta

GOMBURZA
• Acronym of the surnames of the priests Mariano Gomez, Jose Apolonio
Burgos and Jacinto Zamora
• Were executed on Feb. 17, 1872 at Bagumbayan, Luneta by Spanish
Colonial authorities on charges of subversion arising from the 1872 Cavite
mutiny.
• The three priests led a campaign against the abusive Spanish friars and
equal rights among native priests that resulted conflict with the other
Spanish friars, many believe it led to their fate.
• Their deaths awakened the fire that’s been burning inside the native
Filipino people (Indios) for over 300 years of abuse and slavery.
• Ilustrados like Dr. Jose Rizal dedicated his second novel, El Filibusterismo
(1891) to the memory of the 3 priests, Fathers Mariano Gomez, Jose
Burgos and Jacinto Zamora.
