Lesson 2:

Techniques in Selecting and

Organizing Information
• How do you organize?
• Do you sort things out? How?
• Why it is important for us to learn to
organize things?
TOPICS
• Brainstorming List
• Graphic Organizer
• Topic Outline
• Sentence Outline
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, you should be
able:
• to use a brainstorming list
technique for selecting and
organizing information.
• to differentiate between the types of
graphic organizers.
• We probably sort things out all the time -
socks for the sock drawer, forks and spoons
in the silverware drawer, or even sort our
songs on our phone or mp3 player - by
album, artist, or your favorites in a playlist.
• It's the same thing we do when we sort out
ideas for a paper, and it can be easy.
• Organizing information is necessary in the
prewriting stage. It helps you narrow down
the topics for your paper. You can use
several techniques for selecting and
organizing information.
BRAINSTORMING
• How do you select the information
you will include in your writing?
• What technique do you do to
organize the information?
• How do you go about brainstorming
ideas?
BRAINSTORMING
• Brainstorming helps you generate
topics and narrow them down to one.
• It improves your creative thinking
skills and deepens your
understanding of a possible topic.
BRAINSTORMING LIST
How do we do brainstorming list?
• Simply jot down all the words or ideas
that come to mind about a topic.
• Start by writing down a general topic.
• Then, write all the words or phrases that
you can think of in relation to the topic.
You can mark these by using bullet points.
Example 1
General Topic: College Course
• my interests
• my skills
• long-term plan
• school prestige
• cost of schooling
• course requirements
• financial status
• practicality
• demand
• parents' approval
Activity 1:
Brainstorm on the given topic below.
Strategize a technique on how you will list
the information in your group’s
brainstorming activity. Assign 2 reporters
for each group to present in front of the
class. (15 mins.)

“The Impact of Social Media in Classes

and the Learning Environment”
Brainstorming List On a
Thesis Statement
• You can also make a brainstorming list based on a
thesis statement.
• The thesis statement is the main idea, argument,
or purpose of your paper.

How?
After writing your thesis statement, list any word,
phrase, or statement that you can think of that is
related to the topic. Do not restrict yourself to the
sequence of ideas.
Example 1
Your teacher asked you to write a persuasive essay
about this issue:
Should parents choose the course or career for their
children, or should their children make the choice
themselves?

Thesis statement: Children and not their parents

should choose their course or career.
• They know themselves best.
• They know their strengths and weaknesses.
• They will be more willing to learn if they are doing
what they want to do.
• They are more likely to succeed if they pursue
their dream.
• They will look forward to their daily classes or
work.
• Gain more confidence
• Personal happiness

*These related ideas generated through

brainstorming can serve as guide in developing
the body of your paper.
Example 2
In a college entrance exam, you are asked to respond to this
quote:

"Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only
way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work.
And the only way to do great work is to love what you do."
-Steve Jobs-

Thesis statement: Love whatever you choose to do.

• Know your strengths and weaknesses.

• Pursue a dream.
• Do what you are good at.
• Choose a job wherein you can use your skills.
• Give it your best shot.
• Respect your work.
• Practice, practice, practice.
• Always find new ways of loving your work.
• Love your work even if it is not your first choice.
GRAPHIC ORGANIZERS
• Why are graphic organizers useful
for selecting and organizing
information?

• Why is it important for you to know

the different uses of graphic
organizers?
DIFFERENT GRAPHIC
ORGANIZERS
• Organizing information is especially helpful in taking
notes, solving problems, summarizing
information, and writing compositions.
• One way to do this is through a graphic organizer, a
tool that uses visual displays to express relationships
between or among ideas.
Different Graphic Organizers
• Mind Map
• Venn Diagram
• Flowchart
Mind Map
• A mind map is used to represent knowledge of a
concept or idea.
• To create it, you begin with an image or a word
that represents the central idea.
• Then you add branches of major ideas related
to the central idea.
• You can further expand those ideas by adding
more branches.
How To Make a Mind Map?
1. Look for relationships
• Use lines, colours, arrows, branches or some
other way of showing connections between the
ideas generated on your mind map.
2. Draw quickly on unlined paper without
pausing, judging or editing
• All of these things promote non-linear thinking
and the idea of mind mapping is to think
creatively and in a non-linear manner.
3. Write down key ideas
• Some students find that using capital letters
encourages them to get down only the key points.
4. Put the main idea in the centre
• With the main idea or topic in the middle of the page
this gives the maximum space for other ideas to
radiate out from the centre.
5. Leave lots of space
• Some of the most useful mind maps are those which
are added to over a period of time.

Example 3
Activity 2: Brainstorming and Writing
a Thesis Statement

• With your pair, create a general

topic and use a Thesis Statement
as a Technique in brainstorming.
Write your Thesis Statement and
other details on a White Cartolina.
(40 mins.)
VENN DIAGRAM
• Venn diagram is used to show the similarities and
differences between two or more objects or ideas.
• It uses overlapping circles to represent different
objects or ideas that share similar characteristics
in some way.
• The intersection or the area where the circles
overlap shows the characteristic that is common
between or among the objects or ideas.
