• These are the most used types of pumps, Apart from
these types, there are,
– Peristaltic (tubing) pumps.
– Piston pumps.
– Progressing Cavity pumps.
– Pressure Washer pumps.
– Rotary Lobe pumps.
– Rotary Vane pump.
– Syringe pump.

CENTRIFUGAL PUMPS.
• The pump that we use in this work station is a
Centrifugal pump.
• There are several types of Centrifugal pumps.

Centrifugal
Pumps

Single-Stage Axial Flow Mixed Flow Multistage Magnetic Mechanically

Radial Flow Pumps Pumps Centrifugal Drive Coupled
1.SINGLE STAGE RADIAL FLOW
• With single-stage centrifugal pumps, the pump
impeller draws liquid into the impeller's centre and
forces it through the impeller vanes. As it exits the
shaft, it travels down the narrow vanes, increasing
pressure in the pump and generating strong flow.
This is the most common form of centrifugal pump.
2.AXIAL FLOW PUMPS.
• In an axial flow pump, the impeller pushes the liquid
in a direction parallel to the pump shaft. Axial flow
pumps are sometimes called propeller pumps
because they operate essentially the same as the
propeller of a boat.
3.MIXED FLOW PUMPS
• Mixed flow pumps borrow characteristics from both
radial flow and axial flow pumps. As liquid flows
through the impeller of a mixed flow pump, the
impeller blades push the liquid out away from the
pump shaft and to the pump suction at an angle
greater than 90 degrees.
4.MULTISTAGE CENTRIFUGAL
PUMPS.

• Multistage pumps contain more than one impeller

mounted on a common shaft or using different shafts.
Multistage pumps produce greater overall pressure and
discharge higher quantities of liquid. In the multistage,
water flows inward to the numerous impellers, speeding
the flow of water into the vanes and generating higher
pressure than is capable with single-stage pumps.
• The figure shows a diagram of the arrangement of
the impellers of a four-stage pump. The water enters
the pump from the top left and passes through each
of the four impellers in series, going from left to
right. The water goes from the volute surrounding
the discharge of one impeller to the suction of the
next impeller.
5.MAGNETIC DRIVE
• Magnetic drive pumps use a magnetic field that joins a
drive motor and impeller to pump fluids and increase
pressure. They are similar in design to the single stage,
but because of the magnetic field there is no need for a
long shaft, or seals between the motor and impeller.
Leaks are virtually eliminated as well as allowing
significant reductions in internal contamination, wear and
friction loss. These are the most expensive types of
centrifugal pumps.
6.MECHANICALLY COUPLED
• Mechanically coupled pumps use a rotating impeller
driven by the shaft with a motor connected by a
strong seal. These are the least expensive centrifugal
pumps available for use, and offer only moderate
pressure and flow rates when compared to the other
types. They are also the most prone to leaks or
damage.
• The particular pump used in this work station is
manufactured by SPX Johnson Pump company.

Printed Specs on the pump.

Installation & Safety
• This pump is a self-priming centrifugal pump and should
be mounted in a manner that ensures that it is always
flooded or else be primed before being switched on.
• This pump should not be run dry.
• But running the pump dry for a shorter time doesn’t
damage the pump, if the time is shorter than 30 mins.
• After 30 mins the pump will be useless.
• While running the pump dry, a special noise can be
heard.
• The direction of rotation of the pump is clock-wise,
viewed from the front towards the body.
• This pump is made for continuous duty and for
voltage fluctuation of ± 20%.
• The pump must not be used for sea water or
contaminated fluids.
• This pump can be installed in optional position,
horizontally or vertically.
• To avoid air-locks when mounted horizontally, the
outlet should be turned in such a way that the it is
directed upwards or is placed on the upper side of
the pump body.
Wiring Dimensions
Design
• The pump is attached via a ring clamp, which is
mounted on the profile plate by means of two screws
and T-head nuts.
Purpose of pump in the workstation
• The Compact Workstation combines 4 closed-loops
with digital and analogue sensors and actuators.
With a PLC or a controller it is possible to use them
individually or cascaded.
– Level Controlled System.
– Flow rate Controlled System.
– Pressure Controlled System.
– Temperature Controlled System.
• The centrifugal pump P101 (1) is the controlling
equipment used in all controlled systems. The
pump is delivering fluid from a reservoir tank
B101 through the piping system to B102.
• The pump is driven by the motor controller A4 and
relay K1.
• With a digital output(O2 at XMA1) it is possible to
switch from digital binary control to analogue control
variable from 0 to 24 V.

• At digital binary control (O2 = 0) the pump is turn

on/off with a additional output (O3 at XMA1).

• At analogue control (O2 = 1) the drive voltage from

analogue output signal channel 0 (UA1 at X2) is
setting the speed of the pump from 0 to 24 V.
New version of the pump
• C090P5-1 is the new version of the  CM30P7-1.
