System software controls basic computer operations and includes the operating system. The operating system manages communication between software and hardware and allocates resources. Application software performs specific tasks for users like word processing, spreadsheets, graphics, and databases. System software is supplied by manufacturers while application software is developed by users or third parties to solve unique problems. System software runs at a lower level than application software and provides the platform for applications to function.

software ENGR. NUZHAT MADINA What Is Computer Software? Software is the set of instructions (also called a program) that guides the hardware through its job. That tells the computer what to do? And how to do it? All components which are non tangible (Not Touchable) are called software. Examples: Ms Office, Operating Systems, Adobe photo shop etc Without software the hardware that is used to build a computer system would not be very useful. A software program contains the instructions that the computer must follow to carry out the task. Sometimes more than one program is required to complete a task. When this is the case the group of programs which together complete the task are known as a software package. Software programs are originally produced by computer programmers who will write the instructions that form the program in a programming language. What are the different types of Computer Software
Example pieces of software are:
A word processor A multimedia encyclopedia A spreadsheet TYPES OF SOFTWARE A software is usually classified as being two types Systems software Applications software. SYSTEM SOFTWARE
Systems software controls the operation of a computer. Without systems
software a computer would not function. The most important piece of systems software is the operating system. The operating system will perform vital tasks such as: Managing communications between software and hardware. Allocating computer memory to other software programs. Allocating CPU time to other software programs. TYPES Operation systems Utility program Programming languages Device drivers APPLICATION SOFTWARE
Application software consists of programs designed to perform specific tasks
for users‖. Application software can be used as a productivity/business tool; to assist with graphics and multimedia projects; to support home, personal, and educational activities; and to facilitate communications. TYPES: Word Processor Presentation Software APPLICATION SOFTWARE Spreadsheet: (A spreadsheet is an interactive computer application for organization, analysis and storage of data in tabular form. Spreadsheets are developed as computerized simulations of paper accounting worksheets) Communication software: (Communication software is used to provide remote access to systems and exchange files and messages in text, audio and/or video formats between different computers or users. ) APPLICATION SOFTWARE Desktop Publisher: (Desktop publishing (abbreviated DTP) is the creation of documents using page layout skills on a personal computer. Desktop publishing software can generate layouts and produce typographic quality text and images comparable to traditional typography and printing. This technology allows individuals, businesses, and other organizations to self-publish a wide range of printed matter. Desktop publishing is also the main reference for digital typography. When used skillfully, desktop publishing allows the user to produce a wide variety of materials, from menus to magazines and books, without the expense of commercial printing.) APPLICATION SOFTWARE Graphics Package: Graphics packages are essentially kits that allow graphic artists to create several types of computer-generated artwork, such as paintings and drawings as well as photographs. Database: (A database is an organized collection of data.[1] It is the collection of schemas, tables, queries, reports, views, and other objects. The data are typically organized to model aspects of reality in a way that supports processes requiring information, such as modelling the availability of rooms in hotels in a way that supports finding a hotel with vacancies) Differences b/w End user applications & System Software Application Software are user written program develop to solve a particular application or problem that is unique to that organization while system software are manufacturer supplied programs for controlling the operation of the entire system. System software is computer software designed to operate the computer hardware and to provide a platform for running application software. Application software, also known as an application or an "app", is computer software designed to help the user to perform singular or multiple related specific tasks. Differences b/w End user applications & System Software System software or Operating System is the software that allows the computer to boot. Applications are programs that run inside of or on top of the Operating System and allows you to do things like email or word processing.
