Field Bus5

Field bus is a digital communication network used in industry to connect intelligent measurement and control devices. It provides two-way communication on a multidrop link to replace analog 4-20mA standards. There are several field bus protocol standards defined in 1999. A field bus network can connect devices over long distances using repeaters, with a maximum distance of around 6 miles. Field bus uses various components like terminals, cards, and devices to implement measurement and control in the field. It provides benefits like reduced wiring but also higher costs and more complex implementation versus traditional analog systems.

FIELD BUS

Introduction

•A Field bus System is a digital, two-way, multidrop communication

link among intelligent measurement and control devices.
•Field bus is a generic term that describes a new digital
communications network that is being used in industry to replace the
existing 4-20 mA analog signal standard.
History

In 1999 a committee formed the IEC 61158 standard with eight different protocol sets:

 FOUNDATION Fieldbus H1

 ControlNet

 PROFIBUS

 P-Net

 FOUNDATION Fieldbus HSE

 Interbus

 SwiftNet

 WorldFIP

Control in the Field
Why control in the Field

• Control In the field provides loop integrity, increasing control loop

availability and reliability.

• Control in the field provides better performance than control in the

DCS, reducing variability.

Field bus cable types
Maximum length of a network

•A maximum of four repeaters can be used between any two devices

on a field bus network.
•Using four repeaters ,the maximum distance between any two devices
on the network is 9500 meters;31,168 feet ;ort 5.9 miles.
Interoperability between field bus and Hosts
Field bus Components

• Bus Terminal
• EtherCAT

• Fieldbus Box
• Lightbus
• PC Fieldbus Cards

• Switches

And more …
Analog Devices-Field Devices
Protocol status
Field Bus Device

 Absolute/ Differential pressure

 Electromagnetic flow meter

 Ultrasonic flow meter

 Temperature Transmitter
 Nuclear level

 Field bus to pneumatic

 Ultrasonic level
Preparing for Field bus

• Select appropriate wire type and size for field bus application

• Locate junction boxes in strategic locations

• Power and terminate segment properly

• Locate loop devices on one network ,if possible avoid,

• series wiring

• Too many devices on one network

• Loop devices on more than one segment

Advantages of Field bus

• A major advantage of field bus is the capital expenditure (CAPEX)

savings associated with cable elimination because multiple devices
can communicated with the single bus network
• Process maintenance is easier so it will save the cost.
Disadvantages of Field bus

• Field bus systems are complex, so more training needed

• The price of field bus components is higher

• Field bus test devices are more complex

• Device manufacturers have to offer different versions of devices due

to different field bus standards.
• the cost of the devices and increases the difficultly of device

selection.
Application

• Quest Separation Technologies , Food & Beverage industries.

• Most new projects and revamps are specifying field bus

Refining
Chemical
pharmaceutical
Pulp and paper
Current State

• Recent additions or planned additions to IEC 61158 include but are

not limited to:
 PROFINET IO
 EtherCAT

• Both FOUNDATION Field bus and Profibus technologies are now

commonly implemented within the process control field, both for
new developments and major refits.
